Job Description
An excellent opportunity is available for two Research Officers (Chemists) to join the WEHI node of MedChem Australia at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.
About the position
MedChem Australia is a multi-institute partnership between WEHI, Monash University and the University of Sydney to advance drug discovery by providing medicinal chemistry support and expertise to researchers across Australia.
To form part of the team in the WEHI node of MedChem Australia, we are seeking two synthetic medicinal chemists with a strong ability to design, execute and problem solve synthetic routes to target molecules.
The successful applicants’ primary responsibilities will be to synthesise novel compounds and work with other scientists to advance MedChem Australia supported projects within the WEHI node. These will be laboratory-based roles, principally at our Bundoora Campus, reporting to the Manager of the WEHI node of MedChem Australia. Other responsibilities may include interpretation of assay data and structure-activity relationships for compound design and assisting with the preparation of patents and journal manuscripts.
Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in medicinal chemistry or synthetic organic chemistry
  • A demonstrated ability to synthesise organic compounds on a milligram to multi-gram scale, with experience in a medicinal chemistry or parallel chemistry setting highly regarded
  • Able to independently devise time- and cost-efficient synthetic routes
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills
  • An excellent academic record and achievements

Desirable knowledge and skills

  • Experience in the design of bioactive molecules and an understanding of small molecule drug discovery principles
  • Experience with organometallic cross couplings or in synthetic organic chemistry under an inert atmosphere
  • Experience in a commercial or academic drug discovery setting
  • Experience in the use of chemoinformatic tools or other chemistry relevant computer tools

  • Excellent communication skills, approachable and able to work constructively within a team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchers
  • Reliable and able to manage time effectively

Terms of appointment
This position is available for two of years in a full or part time (0.8-1.0 FTE) capacity. Salary is Research Employee Level A6-A8 ($104,071 - $111,707). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
