Overview The Research Scientist will assist with the development of techniques to artificially inseminate female mosquitoes that allows for the development of viable offspring. This methodology will eventually be used to deposit cryopreserved sperm into females. This position works 40 hours per week, some of which may consist of occasional weekend and holiday work. The Research Scientist will be hired by, and an employee of, the CDC Foundation and will support the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Duties and Responsibilities · Maintain and rear insects · Perform bioassays and other experiments with the goal of developing a means to artificially inseminate female mosquitoes to produce viable offspring.  Potential activities include: o stimulating male mosquitoes to release sperm via several methods including removing the heads o co-injecting a 20-hydroxecdysone, a hormone transferred from male to female during mating o attempting external fertilization of eggs from gravid females that have been mated with hybrid males with degenerate testes · Assist in preparing and distributing mosquitoes to collaborators · Maintain records (paper and electronic) and related documents · Prepare reports as scheduled or requested by the supervisor · Conduct general laboratory maintenance · Follow established biosafety protocols and procedures · As required by the project, participate in limited travel for training purposes · Supervise Laboratory Technician assigned to the project by ensuring they are trained to perform their duties, working with them to set performance goals, holding regular meetings and providing regular constructive feedback, monitoring progress toward performance goals, completing annual performance evaluations, and approving time and attendance · Maintain regular communication with the project’s Program Officer and Principal Investigator regarding performance of Laboratory Technician · Participate in recruitment and onboarding of project staff, as appropriate · Other duties as assigned Qualifications and Skills Necessary · Ph.D. degree in entomology, biology, public health, or related science field (or minimum two years relevant experience) · Laboratory experience in the handling and rearing of insects preferred · Demonstrated ability to plan and manage time and effort to ensure high quality materials are produced · Demonstrated ability to make efficient judgments regarding priorities and be largely self-directed · Proven ability to compile and analyze lab data · Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills · Proficient use of different computer programs (Microsoft Office and lab analysis software) · Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success as a team player · Ability to interact with individuals from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds · Highly capable of tracking, summarizing, and reporting lab activities · Experience in performing laboratory maintenance activities Position Highlights Location: This position is based in Atlanta, GA and will work a hybrid schedule at the CDC’s Roybal campus.
