At the Seattle Institute for Biomedical and Clinical Research (SIBCR), scientists seek new ways to improve the health and well-being of Veterans through research and education conducted at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS). SIBCR’s research spans a broad range of areas such as mental health; neuroscience; diabetes, endocrinology and nutrition; prosthetics; oncology; age-related diseases; and, pulmonary diseases. We are seeking a Research Scientist for Dr. John Neumaier in the Mental Health Service line.

SUMMARY:

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow with PhD training in Neuroscience or Pharmacology relevant to neuroscience who has extensive experience in neuropharmacology, neurobiology and behavior. Methods will include stereotaxic surgery, viral vector manipulation of gene expression, working with crossing lines of transgenic mice, and behavioral pharmacology experiments including conditioned fear responses, pain sensitivity, motivation, memory, decision making, and emotional behaviors related to addiction, mood, and anxiety.

REQUIREMENTS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in analyzing stress behaviors including innate emotional behaviors such as fear conditioning and measurement of the release of neurotransmitters in rodents.
  • Familiarity with modern genotyping methods as well as RNA analysis methods such as in situ hybridization histochemistry is an important asset.
  • Managing junior researchers’ contributions to research projects and data analysis and interpretation.
  • Excellent record keeping and writing skills, an established track record of publications, and experience in assisting with grant writing.
