JOB DESCRIPTION

Vertex is currently seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with a strong background in Mass Spectrometry (MS) and proteomics to join our Protein MS team, in our Structural Biology and Biophysics Department in Oxford, UK. This team supports projects from early stage through to preclinical and provides a global capability in state-of-the-art protein mass spectrometry. The position requires experience in the design, preparation, execution and analysis of unbiased proteomics and targeted quantitative protein/peptide assays to interrogate disease biology and enable small molecule drug discovery. Excellent communication skills are required as is a strong ability to work in a team. Experience with other MS techniques such as small molecule, Intact Mass, Native, HDX, or PTM characterisation would be desirable.
As a key player within a vibrant and expanding multi-disciplinary drug discovery team you will be exposed to every aspect of drug discovery and development in one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies.

Responsibilities
  • Design and execute novel quantitative mass spectrometry assays for peptides and proteomics, including analysis of protein PTMs (e.g. glycosylation, ubiquitination).
  • Design, develop and optimize methods in chemoproteomics to identify small molecule target engagement.
  • Develop and optimize workflows from sample preparation to data acquisition and data analysis, including statistical analysis.
  • Work across multiple MS techniques (protein characterisation, small molecule, peptide mapping)
  • Support running of MS instruments and take responsibility for routine upkeep.
  • Deliver results in a fast-paced and dynamic research environment and be willing to learn new techniques and technologies as required by the role.
  • Organise, record, and report results according to data integrity guidelines.
  • Interpret and explain results to cross-functional teams.
