Computer Software/Engineering
We are looking for a research software engineer with experience in open source scientific computing or bioinformatics to join the research group of Wolfgang Huber at EMBL in Heidelberg.
You will enhance and improve scientific software packages for modern biological research, including single cell RNA-seq and multi-omics data analysis, for spatial omics, and for integrative multi-modal machine learning on large datasets. To this end, you will use state-of-the-art backend libraries, scientific computing environments, containerisation and cloudification tools, and latest developments in AI (e.g., LLMs). You will also contribute to training and support of users, and generate use cases, workflows, and improved documentation. Your remit will include the R/Bioconductor packages DESeq2, EBImage, biomaRt, Rarr, DEXSeq, IHW, rhdf5 (all on
https://www.bioconductor.org/packages/
).
You will be embedded in a vibrant research team and the wider research and scientific services community at EMBL that enable you to work at the cutting edge of scientific and technological developments. Your software will play crucial roles in fundamental biological research as well as in biomedical applications, e.g., in cancer. You will be working in a community of research software engineers and expert scientists, including Bioconductor, EMBL’s active data science community, de.NBI and ELIXIR.
The position is part of Baden-Württemberg’s State Institute for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (LIBIS) and aligns with the aims and goals of de.NBI/ELIXIR-DE (
www.denbi.de
). It is thus embedded in the coordinated European-wide effort ELIXIR (European Life Science Infrastructure for Biological Information).
