JOB DESCRIPTION
Two-year, multi-faceted avian field position with a start date of August 1 based in Columbia, Missouri; with field sites in pine woodlands of the Ozark Highlands of Missouri and Arkansas. This position will assist with multiple research objectives and projects. The position will entail capture (mist-netting) and songbird banding, radio telemetry, nest searching and monitoring, and supervision of a field technician. The applicant will work closely with state and federal biologists. Data gathering, entry, and management skills will be required; and opportunities will be available for data analysis, results interpretation, and possibly assistance with manuscript writing.
The ability of the applicant to be motivated and flexible are a must. Applicant must also be flexible with multiple living locations that may vary by season. Housing provided while in the field. The position requires early, long and irregular hours under remote and adverse conditions (heat, rain, mosquitoes, etc.). Individuals will be required to work alone and in groups.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have a Bachelors in Ecology, Wildlife, Biology, or a related field. Candidates should also have field experience with any of the following activities: avian point counts, mist-netting and songbird banding, attaching VHF radios to small birds, and nest searching and monitoring. Candidates must also be in good physical condition to traverse rough and rugged terrain.
Preferred candidates will have field experience in all of the above field activities in addition to being highly motivated with strong organizational and communication skills. Experience capturing, handling, banding, and resighting brown-headed nuthatch is also preferred.
