POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) is currently seeking Research Specialist II to join our team of professionals.

Duties Include:

  • Plans, directs, and conducts research experiments approved by the Principal Investigator (PI). Performs experiments using techniques including but not limited to cell culture techniques, flowcytometry, western blot, ELISA, IHC, DNA and RNA, mechanical testing, heart valve pulse duplicator and durability tester. Performs medical device prototyping using techniques including but not limited to electrospinning, dip molding, 3D-printing using bio inert and bioresorbable polymers.
  • Performs computational modeling and design optimization using softwares including but not limited to LS Dyna, SolidWorks. Performs or Participates to small and large animal model experiments. Obtains specimen from the Operating rooms and participates to biobanking effort.
  • Oversees the ordering of lab supplies and services including restricted purchases that need Environmental Health and Services (EHS) approval (Controlled substances) and National Institute of Health (NIH) reagents orders. Maintains a monthly compilation of expenses.
  • Communicates research results to Principal Investigator (PI) and other researchers. Prepares descriptions of all methods used in experimentation, including archiving such protocols.
  • Responsible for EHS compliance records including chemical inventory, controlled substances, storage, MSDS, training records, waste disposal management, lab inspections and renewal drug permits.
  • Supervises staff and coordinates the experiments performed by research fellows, students and laboratory technicians such as analysis, animal (mouse) manipulation, and all other lab duties under direction of PI.
  • Authors publications (as relevant) and may co-present with PI at meetings and/or conferences. Collaborates with other researchers on publications of research findings.
  • Contributes to the development of reports and data summaries, data input, and documentation of ongoing research and monitoring efforts. Provides support with database development, data collection and data input.
  • Prepares sample preps, assists with the analysis of the samples, and collects data.
  • Provides assistance with manuscript preparation and grant submission processes. Writes independently federal and non-federal grant applications. Obtains funding.
  • Operates and maintains various research instruments and equipment. Coordinates repair of equipment and maintenance of contracts.
  • Revises Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocol drafts prior to submission and advises on methodology. In conjunction with the PI, amends and renews the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and IRB protocols.
  • Oversees bio hazardous and toxic waste is disposed in accordance with EHS rules and regulations. Coordinates chemical waste schedule.
  • Ensures compliance with protocol requirements, as well as local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serves as Laboratory Safety Manager.
  • Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator.
  • Facilitates collaboration with external institutions or industry partners, when appropriate.
  • Provides guidance and technical mentorship to graduate students, medical students, and research technicians.
  • Stays up to date with current scientific literature and emerging technologies. Proposes new lines of investigation to the PI (as relevant) aligned with the lab’s mission in surgical science and innovation.
