Description A full-time position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Joanna Goldberg in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University. This laboratory is located in the O. Wayne Rollins Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta, GA on the same floor as the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. This new position will help advance our group’s research efforts to identify and test novel therapeutics against bacterial pathogens. Our laboratory studies bacterial pathogenesis with a particular focus on infections in people living with the inherited disease cystic fibrosis (CF). The researcher will work on projects along with our colleagues at Georgia Tech, at the University of Queensland, and at the University of Texas, Southwestern. Experiments involve bioinformatics, state of the art bacterial genetics/genomics, cell culture, and mouse models of infection. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for these assays models will be used. The long-term goal of this work is to devise rational methods to disrupt virulence and promote clearance of infecting bacteria, and thereby improve the lives of those living with CF. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator. May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation. Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases. Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator. ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS: The researcher will perform experiments, initially designed by the PIs and colleagues, but then independently with oversight by the PI. The position requires keeping careful detailed notebooks including experimental procedures and accurate presentation of results and analysis of data. The ability to review the literature for related research developments and techniques is strongly encouraged as well as a willingness to learn and implement new skills. Weekly meeting will be held with the PI and monthly meetings with collaborators.Other responsibilities include training others on the SOPs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with bacteriology/microbiology, bioinformatics and/or mouse infections considered a plus. NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion.
