JOB SUMMARY:

The Lessieur laboratory is seeking energetic and creative researchers to join our team in investigating the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and ways to prevent it. This position will collaborate with the principal investigator and other laboratory researchers to provide general laboratory assistance to support research activities. Performs assignments that are non-routine and vary in complexity with general direction. Compiles data and computes results for a variety of research procedures, tests and techniques. Willingness to work with animal models, mainly mice is required. Training as needed will be provided.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE, TRAINING :

  1. Education
  • Minimum Education: HS/GED; Bachelor’s degree in biological science or related science preferred.
  1. Experience
  • 6 months – 1 year research/lab experience.
  • Knowledge in biological science-related field required.
  • Lab experience working in molecular biology and cell biology preferred, but not required.
  1. Abilities and Characteristics
  • Willingness to be trained in cell and molecular biology including microscopy and flow cytometry.
  • Ability to carry out work assigned according to research protocol.
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols, including safety guidelines.
  • Computer analysis skills and techniques.
  • Routine analysis and interpretation of research data.
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical/methodological skills.

Responsibilities
  1. Plans and conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. Independently performs non-routine and complex research laboratory procedures and techniques, including but not limited to: (Percentage of time: 70%)
  • Maintaining a diabetic mouse colony (induction of diabetes and insulin administration). Includes genotyping of mutant and transgenic lines as needed.
  • Physiological studies and in vivo imaging.
  • Cell culture.
  • Western blotting.
  • Immunostaining and Microscopy.
  • Flow cytometry.
  • Assisting in autopsies and tissue collection.
  • Preparing experimental reagents and buffers.
  • Clean and wash all laboratory glassware.
  1. Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments. Provides analyses and interpretations of results for review by supervisor. (Percentage of time: 10%)
  2. Provides input and updates on progress of research and makes recommendations for modification as appropriate. (Percentage of time: 5%)
  3. Coordinates and organizes laboratory with the Scientist: monitoring consumable stocks, freezer organization and data storage (Percentage of time: 15%)
  4. Perform all tasks in a safe manner in compliance with safety policies and according to hazardous materials regulations; maintains a neat workstation and environment. (Percentage of time: ongoing)
  5. Perform special projects or other related work as required or requested. (Percentage of time: Ongoing)
