Job Description
The Research Technician II, under general supervision, performs duties related to the day-to-day farm operations. Assist the Research professionals in accomplishing research goals and objectives relating to projects that require agricultural field studies.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.
This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Make and records and measurement of animal species that ensure the institutional program for animal care and use is functional; Record and maintain pesticide applications records. with managers to determine production requirements, conditions of equipment and supplies work schedules; Maintain inventory and organization of Animal and Farm Facility supplies and order as required; Assist in providing guidance, training, technical expertise to other research technician staff and student employees.
  • Assist in the training of animals to ensure there is appropriate socialization and desensitization for human interaction. Assist in maximizing the productivity of the breeding herd by making quality animal husbandry activities for applicable animal species (i.e. Poultry, Cattle, and Goats) and meeting those targets. Assist in maximizing the productivity of the breeding herd by making quality animal husbandry activities for applicable animal species (i.e. Poultry, Cattle, and Goats) and meeting those targets.
  • Perform general and routine cleanliness, maintenance and minor repairs on the farm and farm buildings such as fences, gates, feeders, pens, etc. and work with supervisor(s) to ensure work orders are processed and fulfilled for external services needed. Conduct routine maintenance checks; Perform general maintenance of all farm and landscape equipment and work with supervisor(s) to ensure work orders are processed and fulfilled for external services needed; Operate heavy and light equipment including but not limited to tractors, trucks, pickups, skid steers, post hole auger, loaders, and other equipment as needed; Perform work assignments utilizing skills such as mechanical, carpentry and welding; Assist with the preparation, loading and transporting of animals to off-site events and other transport needs as necessary.
  • Implements and maintains data collection and summarization of feed trials; Assists senior staff members in conducting major feedlot experiments and consults in developing procedures; Assist and support the veterinarian and research staff with medical, routine animal health procedures and research; Assembles and operates laboratory and technical equipment while research is being conducted; setup equipment and materials prior to the research being performed; Makes and records observation, scientific measurements for plant and animal related activities; Assist the researchers in experiments and/or field trials in areas such as crop bio-technology, genomics, animal re-production and artificial technologies; Assembles and operates laboratory and technical equipment while research is being conducted; setup equipment and materials prior to the research being performed; Makes and records observation, scientific measurements for plant and animal related activities. Establishes research protocol in coordination with supervisor.
  • Perform general animal welfare activities such as feeding, watering, grooming, and exercising of animals and collecting all the data from this project that includes ruminal fluid, digestibility, and degradability data; treating the livestock for either disease contraction or prevention; conduct daily animal health and welfare assessments and maintain the welfare of the animals in the relevant animal species area primarily assigned; Perform daily evaluations of research animals and conducts routine animal health surveillance; Ensure daily animal inspection information is collected correctly and submitted for entry into farm management program. Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, and committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Agriculture, Animal Science, Biology or a related life science.
  • Previous farm, livestock, or animal care experience a plus.
  • Solid understanding of current practices and standard of care in cattle husbandry, including low-stress cattle handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of artificial insemination in cattle, calving experience, and body condition scoring.
  • Ability to work independently while adhering to established plans, programs and protocols.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy required.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Ability to exert heavy force.
  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
