Description
USNH Employees should apply within Workday through the Jobs Hub app The Northeast Wildlife Monitoring Network (NEWMN), part of the Earth Systems Research Center (ESRC), is looking for a field technician (essential staff) to check remote cameras in northern New Hampshire and Vermont during the fall of 2025, including those under the New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG), Dartmouth College (DART), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (US FWS), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and SiMPL projects. There are 131 remote camera sites under these projects in this region that are part of NEWMN. Approximately half of the sites will be checked by PI Alexej Sirén, and we are looking for a technician to check the remaining cameras. Some of these cameras have been maintained by agency staff. It is the role of the technician to check cameras that these staff cannot maintain (n ~ 70). The effort on this study supports ongoing work within ESRC evaluating the effects of changes in snowpack and habitat on wildlife populations. Many of the sites have been operating since 2014 making it one of the longest running camera surveys in North America. Our survey also includes a variety of remote regions such as high elevation regions of the White Mountain National Forest and the semi-boreal landscapes of the Connecticut Lakes Region. Being able to check these sites on an annual basis is critical for gathering new information on how snow-dependent and boreal species such as snowshoe hare and lynx will respond to changes in snowpack and forested habitats. Duties/Responsibilities Checking cameras (80%) Checking existing camera sites (n~70) to change batteries, adding snow stakes, and swapping SD cards. Replacing old cameras with new ones. Traveling to and from field sites. Administrative work (20%) Emailing PI Sirén and other NEWMN collaborators about site surveys. Uploading camera data to the WildTrax database platform. Prepping camera gear. Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience: Master’s (MS) degree, and at least 6 years of experience conducting camera trap surveys in northern New England. Required Licenses & Certifications: We require that the technician has a valid driver’s license (NH Driver’s License is preferred) as they will be required to travel to and from the field sites. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: We are looking for a technician that has the capability to work independently and communicate effectively with project partners and collaborators. This position also requires considerable problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a range of outdoor environments, including cold temperatures and in rugged mountainous terrain. The technician must be able to hike up to 12 miles per day for some remote sites and carry a 30 lb. pack (including personal gear). We expect that the technician will be able to work 6–10-hour days in the field and be able to use modern (e.g., GPS) and traditional navigational gear. We also require that the technician is flexible with their work hours, occasionally working on weekends and that they are good at following established field protocols. Lastly, we also require that the applicant be able to use database, email, and word processing software as well as Survey123 and WildTrax software. All of these software programs will be used regularly by the applicant on this project. Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a MS degree in wildlife ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field. We would also prefer to have someone with prior experience working in this area, preferably living within a 1-hour drive to most field sites. We also prefer that the candidate has advanced experience using camera traps, following detailed protocols, and driving in remote areas.
