JOB SUMMARY

The Research Technology Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining advanced research computing infrastructure and services in support of the university’s research mission. This role collaborates closely with faculty, research staff, and internal IT teams to enable computational research, ensuring high-performance, reliable, and secure computing environments. The position serves as a technical expert in areas such as high-performance computing (HPC), research storage, cloud computing, automation and specialized software solutions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Proficiency in Linux system administration in a research or enterprise environment
• Knowledge of containerization technologies in research computing environments
• Familiarity with cloud computing services and hybrid cloud architecture
• Understanding of cybersecurity best practices related to research data and computational environments
• Strong scripting skills for automation and systems management
• Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to troubleshooting and system optimization
• Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders including researchers, IT staff and external partners

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a closely related field
• Three years of professional experience in research computing, systems engineering, or a closely related technical field supporting research environments
• Hands-on experience managing HPC clusters, job schedulers, and parallel file systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in a university or research institution setting
• Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) frameworks such as ITIL
• Certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or similar credentials
• Experience supporting researchers in fields such as computational science, data science, or bioinformatics

• Designs, implements, and maintains high-performance computing clusters, research storage systems, and associated infrastructure
• Collaborates with researchers to design and support computing environments tailored to research needs, including on-premises and cloud-based solutions
• Monitors system performance, conducts capacity planning, and ensures system reliability through proactive maintenance and upgrades
• Develops automation scripts and tools to streamline research computing workflows and system administration tasks
• Ensures compliance with cybersecurity policies, data privacy regulations, and research data management best practices
• Participates in incident response and troubleshooting for escalated research technology issues
• Documents system configurations, standard operating procedures, and knowledge base articles for internal use and end-user support
