GENERAL ASSISTANT

We provide accommodation for around 5,500 students in either self-catering halls or catered halls located at different sites, both on and off campus. During vacations our accommodation facilities are used for vacation letting and day meetings.
We are looking for approachable customer-focussed people to assist in the day-to-day running of our residential sites. As these are front-line customer service positions you must be comfortable dealing with a wide variety of customers, have excellent communication skills and be able to demonstrate a commitment to providing an excellent quality of service.
Your role is essential to the smooth running of the building and its services so a basic working knowledge of building structures, and in some positions the ability to carry out minor maintenance works, would be an advantage.
As there is a need to provide written reports, respond to electronic mail and input information into databases, basic computer skills are required e.g. a knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, Outlook & Excel.

Responsibilities
  1. Liaising with the Residence Manager or a member of the site team regarding any issues or maintenance problems encountered during the day.
  2. Carrying out opening and locking up procedures.
  3. Responding to any fire alarm activations in accordance with set procedures.
  4. Undertake any minor maintenance jobs (e.g., light bulbs, unblocking sinks/toilets) as directed by the Residence Manager or a member of the site team Providing Customer Service to residents and carry out varied reception duties, including assisting residents who may be locked out, issuing of keys, issuing post, liaising with parcel couriers, taking details of fault reports and assistance with resident’s luggage.
  5. Answering telephone calls in a professional and courteous manner.
  6. Assisting to set up meeting rooms, i.e. room layout, replenishing stationary, placing audio visual equipment in the room, ensuring refreshments are available.
  7. Responsible for checking cleaning public areas, including common rooms, meeting facilities, office, rest areas, bedrooms, WC’s etc.
  8. Responsible for the removal of all rubbish in the outside bins and where necessary replace with new liners and litter picking.
  9. Providing contractors with keys for repair work as required and taking details of work completed when keys are returned.
  10. Outside normal working hours if urgent maintenance works are requested contact University Security Services, via telephone.
  11. Flushing of water outlets as part of the legionella prevention program.
  12. General assistance in maintaining residence gardens or grounds, this would include litter picking, general weed removal by hand and tidying of borders or planted areas.
  13. You may be asked to work with the Residential Services Stores Team, this would include working with them in a university vehicle (as a non-driver) to deliver goods, stores, equipment, white goods to residence sites.
  14. Any other duties as may be required by the Residence Manager.
  15. Vacation duties may consist of general duties and working at another site as and when required by Residential Services.

  17. Effective communication skills including written and verbal.

  21. A willingness to train and develop to meet all requirements of the job description provided.
