Location: Brooklyn, NY (On-Site, Residential Campus)
Schedule: Part-Time (Early mornings, evenings, occasional weekends, 24 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Residential Chef at Hope Ignites NY plays a key role in building a healthy, structured, and empowering residential environment by preparing nutritious meals, engaging scholars in life skill development, and managing kitchen operations. This position is responsible for breakfast and dinner service, kitchen cleanliness, inventory and food ordering, and ensuring all meals meet nutritional standards. The Chef also supports scholar development through cooking classes, chore assignments, and consistent communication with scholars and families.

QUALIFICATIONS

· High school diploma or GED required; culinary training or food handler’s certification preferred
· 2–3 years experience in residential, school, nonprofit, or institutional food service
· Strong understanding of nutrition, kitchen safety, and sanitation protocols
· Organizational and time management skills; ability to manage kitchen independently
· Ability to positively engage with youth and support life skill development
· Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
· Early morning and evening availability required

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Prepare and serve breakfast daily (Tuesday- Friday 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM), followed by full kitchen clean-up
· Prepare and serve evening snack dinners and ensure nightly snack/water is available to scholars Monday-Thursday 3pm- 7 pm
· Conduct evening meal prep for the following day as needed
· Maintain a clean, organized, DOH-compliant kitchen environment
· Plan meals in accordance with USDA Food Pyramid and student dietary needs
· Track inventory, place food and supply orders, and monitor weekly food spend against budget
· Host one monthly cooking class for scholars focused on healthy eating and kitchen skills
· Assign and supervise weekly scholar kitchen chores to reinforce responsibility and hygiene standards
· Communicate weekly menu plans to scholars and parents by Friday morning via email
· Collaborate with Residential and Wellness teams to ensure meals support scholar health and program goals under the supervision of the Director of Scholar and Collegian Services.

ROLE EXPECTATIONS BY FREQUENCY

Daily Responsibilities
· Prepare and serve breakfast (6:00 AM–8:00 AM)
· Sanitize kitchen, dishes, and equipment after breakfast
· Prepare and serve evening snack dinners
· Leave out evening snack and water for scholars
· Conduct next-day meal preps
· Log meals served and update daily food inventory
· Monitor scholar kitchen areas and reinforce hygiene expectations
Weekly Responsibilities
· Review inventory and place food/supply orders as needed
· Rotate stock and restock pantry, fridge, and snack areas
· Assign and supervise scholar kitchen chores
· Track food spend and submit updates to supervisor
· Coordinate with program team about dietary needs, events, or scholar allergies
· Email the weekly menu to scholars and parents by Friday morning
· Prepare and print kitchen flyers (menus, chores, updates)
Monthly Responsibilities
· Host one scholar cooking class focused on culinary and wellness skill-building
· Conduct a deep kitchen clean (equipment, storage, appliances)
· Reconcile monthly food budget and review vendor spending
· Meet with Residential leadership to review scholar feedback and wellness alignment
· Adjust scholar chore rotation and evaluate scholar kitchen participation
· Review meal quality, variety, and cultural relevance
Per Term Responsibilities
· Submit a seasonal meal plan with balanced, nutritious menu rotations
· Conduct full-term inventory check and bulk restocking
· Coordinate meal alignment with wellness or seasonal programming themes
· Track and report scholar participation in chores and cooking class
· Submit a summary of food spend, scholar cooking engagement, and operational highlights for program reports or board presentations (if needed)
