Job Description: POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Shelter Residential Worker B provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Client/Program Support • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations) • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking urine samples, doing bed checks, room/personal searches • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies enforces behaviour-based restrictions outlined by caseworkers or supervisory staff • May serve as Receptionist for Shelter - Answers phones, takes messages, responds to community inquiring and directs incoming requests • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents • Performs other duties as assigned Written and Verbal Communication • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports WORKING CONDITIONS: • The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or transitional housing and/or supportive housing • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions: o Isolation o Monotony o Odors o Dealing with angry people o Verbal abuse o Work schedule affecting lifestyle o Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste o Exposure to drugs and alcohol • The incumbent may have little to no travel required. • The incumbent carries a pager/walkie talkie and will work shifts. • The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illness due to: o Physical attacks by others o Exposure to infectious diseases o Exposure to bodily fluids o Sharp objects o Other dangerous situations QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications and Certifications: • The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months. • The successful applicant will hold/have a diploma in Social Services • CPR, First Aid Certification • Criminal Record Check • Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements • The incumbent must have more than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting. PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES: • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. • Personable • Organized • Strong service ethic and a friendly disposition with the public • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions • Team oriented and able to take initiative • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds • Computer ability • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. CASUAL AVAILABILITY • Employees are expected to provide availability for all three shift times. (7 AM-3:30PM, 3:30PM-11:30PM and 11:15PM-7:15AM) as per collective agreement. • Casuals must indicate availability for 16 shifts: four must be Saturday or Sunday and two additional must be graveyard (where applicable) each month. • Casuals shall also provide availability for eight statutory holidays annually, including Christmas or New Years Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide: • Background check consent. • A clear vulnerable sector screening. • A clean drivers abstract. • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training. The salary range is based on the Collective Agreement, not any other factors. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $23.64 to $24.02 with a maximum of $24.39. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
