About the role

Lead an iconic Far North Queensland resort. The Sovereign Resort Hotel is looking for an experienced management couple or a single General Manager to lead one of Cooktown's best-known businesses. Reporting to the owners, you'll be accountable for the safe, compliant, profitable and guest-focused operation of the whole business. You'll lead the management team (including Assistant Managers, Retail, Maintenance, Head Chef and Airport Operations) and their teams.

Key responsibilities

• Leading day-to-day operations across accommodation, restaurant, bar, bottle shop and airport services
• Guest experience, reservations, revenue and online distribution, keeping our 4-star standard
• Budgets, P&L, payroll, stock control and monthly reporting to the owners
• Liquor, food, transport and WHS compliance, including holding the RMLV
• Recruitment, rostering, training and performance under the Hospitality Award
• Property and maintenance planning, and capital works
• Marketing, events and community relationships
• Leading cyclone and emergency preparedness through the wet season

About you

• At least two years' senior management experience in a hotel, resort or licensed venue with accommodation, F&B and a bottle shop
• Experience leading multi-department teams of 50 or more
• Strong financial management, including budgets, P&L, payroll, cash and stock control
• Sound working knowledge of the Hospitality Award, Fair Work, WHS and liquor licensing
• A current Queensland RMLV, or the ability to obtain one before starting, plus RSA and Food Safety Supervisor certificates
• Experience with a PMS (ideally OPERA) and POS (ideally SwiftPOS)
• A leadership style that's warm, fair and firm, and the ability to build a stable team in a small community
• A current driver's licence and a satisfactory National Police Check
• A genuine readiness for remote living and the tropical wet season

The Sovereign is a AAA 4-star, 38-room resort in the heart of historic Cooktown, the northernmost town on Australia's east coast and the gateway to Cape York. Set in tropical gardens around a lagoon-style pool, the resort includes resort rooms on-site and luxury villa nearby, The Balcony Restaurant overlooking the Endeavour River and the seven-day Cafe Bar, an on-site bottle shop, and airport and wharf transfers, car hire, fly-stay packages, and airport, freight and pathology logistics services.
