QUALIFICATIONS

· Minimum college diploma in related disciplines such as Criminal Justice or Social Work, and/or related experience and advance training.
· Minimum of 2 years’ experience. Previous experience in security, residential services, or experience working with homeless and at-risk populations.
· Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, including experience working with the homeless population or those in the justice system. Extensive knowledge of harm reduction practices.
· Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
· Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful or emergency situations.
· Basic understanding of security systems, safety procedures, and emergency response.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Availability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
· Have a genuine interest in working with formerly homeless individuals in a caring and empathic manner.
· Have strong rapport building skills to support working with people who have experienced trauma
· Good interpersonal skills.
· Current Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check approved by Management for this position as per Agency requirement and practice in this sector.
· Solid professional boundaries.

Responsibilities

PURPOSE

The John Howard Society Supportive Housing Program is for men and women who are long-term shelter users. The program provides semi-independent accommodation and
support to people, age 18 and over. The John Howard Society manages the site with support from the City of Kawartha Lakes and Kawartha Lakes Housing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and control access to the building, ensuring only authorized individuals enter the premises.
  • Monitor guest and visitors’ activity and log information accordingly.
  • Adhere to guest policies and guest lists for each tenant.
  • Monitor and adhere to trespass lists.
  • Observe cameras and alert Supportive Housing Program staff of any issues necessary
  • Conduct patrols of the building and surrounding areas as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of all emergency protocols and respond quickly and efficiently in case of incidents.
  • Ensure that safety regulations are adhered to, reporting any safety hazards or security concerns immediately.
  • Observe and report suspicious activity or disturbances to the appropriate authorities.
  • Provide support to residents as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of visitors, incidents, and any relevant observations.
  • Assist in the coordination of emergency evacuations when necessary.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure the overall safety and wellbeing of residents and staff.
  • Frequent and open communication with Program Director
  • Respond to any maintenance issues and communicate with on call supervisor
  • Assist the Agency in maintaining accessible, relevant, responsive and quality services. 
  • Adhere to Agency policies, procedures and standards.
  • Respond to situations in a way that reflects the racial, cultural, linguistic and gender-specific needs of the person you are interacting with.
  • Attend and contribute to all staff events, meetings, and initiatives
  • Understanding of and experience working with clients that struggle with behavioural issues.
  • Experience working with people with substance use and mental health disorders.
