JOB SUMMARY AND QUALIFICATIONS

Position summary:The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is a member of the healthcare team, specializing in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with acute and chronic dysfunctions of the cardiopulmonary system. The RCP also provides education to patients, caregivers, and the community in the prevention and management of cardiopulmonary disorders.

Position responsibilities:

  • Perform duties under the direct supervision of the physician
  • Performs routine and critical assessment of all patient age populations, and recommends optimal therapy
  • Administers prescribed doses of medicinal gases and aerosol drugs
  • Performs, and assists in emergent and elective endotracheal intubations
  • Initiates, monitors and adjusts modes of mechanical ventilation
  • Assesses patient response to therapy and takes appropriate action
  • Participates as member in Rapid Response Team as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation of all age populations
  • Provides age-specific, and culturally appropriate care
  • Orients and mentors new staff members, and students enrolled in health care studies
  • Attends and actively participates in department meetings, in-services and other educational programs.
  • Provides education in disease prevention and management to patients, caregivers, and the community.
  • Participates in education of respiratory-related topics to other departments within the hospital
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department
  • Performs diagnostics related to the cardiopulmonary system, including but not limited to blood gas sampling and analysis, respiratory mechanics, and pulmonary function studies. Performs routine maintenance of equipment
  • Participates in QA activities as assigned by the Department Director
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct
  • Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct
  • Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL NEED:

Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:

  • Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited institution of learning.
  • Indiana licensure as Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Credentialed at the Registry level by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 6 months of hire
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in acute care
  • Certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), within 6 months of hire
  • Certification in BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital

Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience:

  • Advanced degree (B.S., B.A., M.S, M.A.) in related scientific or clinical field, e.g.: Respiratory Care, Nursing, Biology.
  • Additional Certification/Registry in specialties of the profession, e.g.: pediatric specialist, pulmonary function specialist, etc.
