REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy.
  • Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Current licensure as a respiratory therapist by Michigan Department of Community Health, Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Licensure and credentials must be always maintained by the employee during employment.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or ability to be certified within 60 days of date of hire.
  • Expert knowledge of all basic and advanced respiratory care techniques, particularly related to ECMO and cardio-pulmonary disease.
  • Ability to promote standard care procedures and remain current with ECMO equipment and procedures.
  • Proficiency in information technology skills (including Microsoft Office software, e-mail, and calendar); proven record of effectively learning and utilizing computer systems and technology.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • At least 3 years of current clinical ECMO experience as an ECMO specialist at a high-volume ELSO member ECMO center.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Master’s degree in respiratory therapy, science, education, or other related field.
  • Credentialed as an Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) registered therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). (UH/CVC RC).
  • ECMO Specialist Certification from AMSECT or ELSO.
  • Certified as an AHA BLS Instructor; ACLS, PALS, or as an Asthma or COPD educator.
  • Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) and Michigan Society for Respiratory Care (MSRC).
Responsibilities

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is responsible for providing clinical expertise and support for the safe and ethical provision of ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) services. The role serves in conjunction with the ECMO Clinical Nurse Educator (ENC) as the primary ECMO Care (EC) liaison for clinical and educational activities within the ECMO department. This includes intensive care units, units that initiate ECMO but do not house ECMO patients (Adult ED, Mott ED, CICU, CVC and Mott Cath lab), and other areas as directed by the ECMO Clinical Nursing Director and ECMO Nursing Supervisor. The ECMO Respiratory Clinical Specialist is selected for specific these responsibilities based upon their expertise and knowledge in ECMO therapy. This position does not involve direct operational or supervisory responsibilities.

  • Practices within the scope of license, certification, or registration.
  • Complies with all applicable continuing education requirements.
  • Complies with all University of Michigan, Michigan Medicine/UMHS and departmental policies, procedures, standards, and expectations.
  • Supports the department’s commitment to continuous improvement activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving among ECMO staff and all other ECMO customers and stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinates annual bedside nurse checkoffs across five clinical units.
