Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Program Manager Drop In Center, the Residential Counselor cares for young adults, establishing a supportive and welcoming atmosphere for homeless street youth receiving services by performing the following duties and responsibilities within the Vision, Mission and Agency Values of BWC in the Drop In Center respite overnight. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Conduct bag checks at the gate in accordance with shelter policies and safety procedures. Ensure each youth signs in prior to entering the shelter. Communicate effectively and professionally with youth, coworkers, supervisors, and management, including the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure. Provide structure and supervision for youth, including implementation of nightly routines. Ensure work areas are cleaned at the end of each shift and promptly report any maintenance, safety, or security concerns. Maintain regular and reliable attendance as required for the position. Complete accurate and timely documentation related to youth behavior, incidents, and progress. Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all youth residing in the shelter at all times. Complete nightly reports for youth staying in respite, including observations and incident reports. Remain on-site at all times while youth are present and never leave youth unattended. Attend agency meetings and trainings as required. Perform routine household tasks, including laundering linens, towels, and bedding, and cleaning sleeping and common areas. Ensure youth do not leave the shelter during overnight hours without authorization. Provide a safe, supportive, and stable environment for youth to rest overnight. Serve as a positive and appropriate role model for youth at all times. Additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Experience working with homeless and culturally diverse youth required. Knowledge of needs of runaway, homeless and street youth. Availability in the evenings and on weekends is a requirement for the position. Experience working with culturally diverse youth required. Required Skills/Abilities: Ability to solve practical problems and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, residential setting. Ability to complete accurate, timely, and thorough documentation related to youth behavior, incidents, and services provided. Basic computer proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Word, email, and other standard office software. Ability to read, understand, and follow written materials such as safety rules, policies, procedures, and reports. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with youth, coworkers, and supervisors. Ability to speak effectively in one-on-one and small group settings with youth and staff. Ability to build rapport and establish positive, respectful relationships with youth. Ability to provide structure and consistency, including implementation of nightly routines and expectations. Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (10–15 minutes or more at a time). Perform repetitive tasks such as stocking items and folding towels and linens. Ability to walk up and down stairs as required. Ability to walk throughout the enclave hourly or as operational needs require. Work Environment: The respite shelter environment is fast-paced and requires the ability to adapt to changing situations. The work environment may include moderate to loud noise levels due to youth activities. Teamwork and collaboration are essential to effectively support youth and maintain a safe environment. Salary Range: $25.00 - $26.00 per hour.
