FIRST GENERAL SERVICES EDMONTON

The Carpenter on the Mitigation Construction team is responsible for performing advanced carpentry tasks in the assembly, installation, and finishing of various restoration projects. This includes framing, drywall installation, custom finishes and constructing components. The Carpenter works closely with Project Management team and other team members to ensure that projects are completed on time, within scope, and in compliance with building codes and safety regulations. This position reports to the Project Manager and Production Manager.
The ideal Carpenter must be a highly skilled and experienced professional with a strong understanding of diverse construction techniques, capable of executing complex carpentry tasks with precision. They must demonstrate leadership abilities to mentor apprentices and junior carpenters, maintain a strong commitment to safety and quality, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 5 years of carpentry experience in the construction and/or restoration industry
  • Journeyman Carpenter certification or equivalent experience
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
  • CSTS 2020 and WHMIS 2015 certifications are required.
  • Additional safety certifications such as First Aid, Fall Protection, or others are considered an asset.
  • Willingness to take lead on sites and step into supervision role when required is considered an asset.
  • First General often has projects throughout Alberta and across western Canada. Willingness to travel out of town for work is considered an asset.
  • Be proficient in framing, drywall installation, custom cabinetry, trim, and finishing carpentry.
  • Be able to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Have knowledge of building codes, safety standards, and regulations for construction.
  • Have experience supervising and mentoring apprentices or junior carpenters.
  • Be proficient in the safe use of carpentry tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
  • General hand and power tools required, specialty tools provided by First General.

SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of residential, commercial and/or restoration construction.
  • Expertise in framing, drywall, custom cabinetry, trim, and finishing carpentry.
  • Ability to accurately interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Skilled in guiding apprentices and junior carpenters to ensure quality and safety.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines on tight schedules.
  • Effective at identifying issues and proposing practical solutions.
  • Dedication to maintaining a safe work environment and following all safety protocols.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and work in a variety of physical conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Perform framing, finishing, and carpentry tasks for a variety of restoration projects.
  • Read and interpret construction blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications to ensure accuracy in all tasks.
  • Install and construct walls, floors, roofs, and other structural components using wood, steel, and other materials as per project requirements.
  • Install drywall, trim, siding, flooring, windows, doors, cabinetry, and other finishes according to specifications.
  • Ensure all work meets building codes, safety regulations, and company quality standards, performing quality checks and troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to apprentices and junior carpenters, ensuring high standards of work and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Assist with the alignment, securing, and final installation of modular units on-site, ensuring proper setup and integration.
  • Collaborate with other trades (electrical, plumbing, etc.) to ensure seamless coordination of carpentry work with other construction elements.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following established safety protocols, ensuring tools and equipment are properly maintained, and complying with OHS standards.
  • Ensure all carpentry tasks are completed within the project timeline, promptly reporting any delays or issues to project managers.
  • Assist with job site preparation and final cleanup, ensuring a clean and organized work area.
  • Supporting with a variety of tasks and needs as they arise to ensure we are successful in all aspects.
