Description
Description MASS MoCA is seeking a part-time, Retail Sales Associate for The Research & Development Store. The R&D Store combines gallery and retail space focused on selling contemporary artist editions and books of the highest quality. The store will host book events, record launches, signings, intimate performances and product-related public programming. The Retail Sales Associate works to achieve the success of retail operations and enhances the visitor experience by connecting shoppers to the materials (books, prints, and ephemera) related to our programming. The ideal candidate will have an interest in contemporary culture and a love of printed matter and art objects—product knowledge can be learned on the job. Basic math and Point of Sale (POS) skills, careful organization and attention to detail are crucial. We're looking for a dependable multitasker who is curious, self-motivated, prompt and able to work independently. This position works closely with and reports to the Manager & Creative Producer of Research & Development and the Associate Retail Manager. This public facing role is vital to the larger team of other front facing departments at MASS MoCA (Public Programs, Membership, Visitor Services and Security) and we think a strong sense of fun and camaraderie are the best way to help “own” the customer experience in this fast-paced, high traffic museum shop environment. MASS MoCA’s retail stores are a key part of the visitor experience and the museum’s earned revenue operation, and also function as a source of information about the museum and surrounding region to visitors beyond the range of products offered. The Retail Sales Associate will work up to 29 hours per week in the busy season (June-October) and up to 16 hours the rest of the year. Availability must include weekends. Duties and Responsibilities: Cheerfully greeting customers and providing suggestions and product information. Handling/counting cash, preparing bank deposits, and running reports for accounting. Monitoring and maintaining an accurate inventory, including receiving new shipments into the POS system and assisting with the organization of semiannual physical inventory counts. Monitoring the online store inventory, publishing and deactivating products as needed, and assisting with building new content. Receiving, packing and shipping online store and phone orders. Monitoring and responding to store voicemail. Cleaning store fixtures and maintaining attractive merchandise displays. Ensuring all pricing, signage and displays are correct at all times. Opening and closing the store and operating the POS system and cash drawer. Organizing overstock and replenishing store displays as needed. Taking initiative to learn about the history of MASS MoCA and the current and past exhibitions and performances in order to answer customer questions. Organizing and affixing price tags to new incoming shipments of products. Candidates must be friendly, patient, computer-savvy, a self-starter and confident to work independently. Requirements Requirements and Qualifications: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required. Customer service experience is a must. Knowledge of the North Adams area is preferred. Must be able to work up to 29 hours per week in the busy season (June-October) and up to 16 hours the rest of the year. Availability must include weekends. This job description is intended to describe the general nature of the role and the work being performed. It is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. The Retail Sales Associate may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities, as needed. Work Conditions: This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, with availability on weekends and holidays, and for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours. The majority of the workday is spent indoors, but occasional special events, exhibitions, and/or festivals may require working outdoors and in inclement weather. The schedule will be determined by the manager. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, on and across various floor types with limited breaks. Must be able to confidently communicate with guests. The employee may be required to climb or balance, squat, kneel, and crouch. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40+ pounds. Must be able to wear PPE when necessary. This position is based on site at MASS MoCA’s North Adams campus; regular in-person attendance is required. As defined by the National Labor Relations Act, this position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110. Compensation and Benefits: Non-exempt. Hourly wage: $18.00 an hour 401(k) retirement plan Roth 401(k) option Paid Time Off (PTO) Massachusetts Earned Sick Time Emergency Assistance Fund (LemonAid) Retirement planning support Professional development reimbursement Educational leave Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums (ROAM) Student loan repayment assistance Discounts at Gift Shop and R&D Store Staff appreciation social events year-round Application Process: Interested candidates should apply online with a resume and cover letter. Incomplete applications—including those missing the requested documents—may not be fully considered. About MASS MoCA: MASS MoCA is a vibrant non-collecting art museum with approximately 300,000 square feet of exhibition space dedicated to visual art and projects by contemporary artists. Formerly a 19th century factory, these exhibition spaces are unconventional, vast, soaring galleries spanning multiple buildings. Half of that space is dedicated to rotating 10–16 month exhibitions of which we present 4 to 6 large-scale exhibitions per year, along with smaller projects and commissions. The additional space is dedicated to long-term exhibitions in conjunction with artists, estates, and collections that run from 10 months to 25 years. MASS MoCA frequently works directly with artists on the fabrication of new commissions and large-scale site-specific installations. MASS MoCA was founded in 1999, not only as a contemporary art museum and performing arts venue, but also as a creative campus with a regional, national and global impact. MASS MoCA is one of the world's liveliest centers for making and enjoying today's most evocative art. With vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues, MASS MoCA is able to embrace all forms of art: music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification. From its beginnings as the major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, to its days as the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century, to its current iteration as a globally renowned contemporary art museum and fabrication center, the 24-acre MASS MoCA campus has a rich history of serving as the economic engine of the city of North Adams and the surrounding region.
