TARGET CLOSE DATE: 10/17/2025 PAY GRADE: Grade 18 TYPE: Full time JOB SUMMARY: Revenue Examiners in the Merit System are responsible for enforcing the City/County/State revenue laws within their jurisdictions. Employees in this position inspect businesses and residences in assigned territories to determine business classification, tax liability, appropriate licensures, and other revenue-related information. Revenue Examiners process various business operation applications (e.g., business licenses, special event permits) and collect relevant taxes (e.g., occupation tax, liquor tax, ad valorem tax, lease tax, lodging tax). Revenue Examiners work primarily in an office environment using standard office equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, copier). This position does not include supervisory responsibilities. Experience with MS Office Suite or similar office productivity software to include (spreadsheets, word processing, and email). Financial experience (e.g., balancing cash, money orders, computing taxes, collecting past due payments, preliminary and final assessments on business licenses and permits). Customer service experience (e.g., face to face or over the phone to handle complaints, research information, provide guidance). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes. Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training (APOST) certification. Experience researching, interpreting, and applying applicable tax laws and Code of Alabama Title 40. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Performs residential and commercial revenue inspections by conducting site visits, reviewing financial and tax documents, and issuing citations using established guidelines to ensure compliance with city, state, and/or county tax and license laws. Oversees the revenue administration process by accepting and reviewing applications and documentation related to tax, revenue and licenses/bonds for proper reporting. Communicates and collaborates with various parties and organizations (e.g., department heads, employees, citizens, board and council members, vendors) by responding to inquiries, tracking internal and external communications, and drafting correspondence to disseminate and receive information related to department/organization activity to ensure notification and compliance. Manages departmental accounts receivable and payable by monitoring expenditures and producing financial reports using financial software to ensure compliance with set financial guidelines and budget. Performs various administrative activities by creating and updating files, maintaining documents, and tracking information using various forms and computer systems in order to maintain records and document organization/department activities. Provides service to internal and/or external customers. Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.
