About the role…..
We’re looking for a creative and driven Assistant Designer – Boardshorts to join our design crew at Rip Curl HQ in Torquay. You’ll work closely with the Head of Design and Boardshorts Design Director to help bring to life world-class boardshort ranges that keep Rip Curl leading the way in surf fashion.

What You’ll Be Doing

Design & Development

• Support the design and development of boardshort ranges from concept to production.
• Help create new blocks, fabrics, and concepts that push the category forward.
• Assist with fittings, approvals, and development alongside the Product Development team.
• Contribute to injection ranges and SMU styles when needed.
• Make sure technical yardage and print techniques are consistent across regions.

Creativity & Innovation

• Stay on top of global surf and youth fashion trends and bring fresh ideas to the table.
• Focus on our edit point customer and help ensure our ranges win on the beach.
• Support the evolution of key product segments like Pro Mirage, Mirage, and Layday.
• Keep the creative direction strong and consistent across all boardshort ranges.

Process & Execution

• Meet design deadlines and maintain great relationships with suppliers.
• Create and scale artwork, yardage repeats, and engineered designs in both low and high res.
• Ensure each region’s market needs are considered and reflected in the range.

Teamwork & Collaboration

• Build strong working relationships with the Head of Design, Senior Boardshort Designer, and the global design team.
• Communicate clearly and consistently across departments to keep everything running smoothly.

What You’ll Bring

• A motivated, enthusiastic approach to design and teamwork.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with others.
• Strong understanding of garment construction, trims, and fabrics.
• A good eye for trends and the ability to apply them in a timely way.
• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
• A genuine belief in the Rip Curl brand, its customers, and its values.
