We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented PACS Administrator to manage and support our Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and related medical imaging applications, hardware, and equipment. The ideal candidate will ensure optimal system performance, support imaging workflows, and collaborate with clinical and technical teams to maintain high-quality image management services.
This position plays a key role in ensuring seamless integration, functionality, and performance of imaging systems and third-party applications used across medical imaging departments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, team management skills, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of clinical workflows in medical imaging. The incumbent is also responsible for managing and coordinating PACS digital imaging initiatives and responsible for PACS budget requests (e.g., hardware, software, equipment, etc.). Additionally, this individual will act as a liaison in digital imaging initiatives within the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Medical Imaging hardware, software, and equipment, continually monitoring the performance and activities of the various systems to ensure they are functioning optimally.
- Administer, monitor, manage, and maintain the PACS and enterprise imaging systems, ensuring availability, performance, and data integrity across radiology departments.
- Coordinate the work schedules and activities of the PACS team.
- Support Epic Radiant RIS configurations, workflows, order interfaces, scheduling, and integration with imaging systems and modalities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues involving PACS, RIS, DICOM communication, HL7 messaging, and image routing.
- Provide support for third-party imaging software including post-processing tools, viewers, image sharing platforms, and speech recognition applications.
- Collaborate with radiologists, technologists, and clinical stakeholders to understand workflow needs and optimize system performance.
- Participate in upgrades, patches, and system migrations, including planning, testing, and implementation.
- Oversee and coordinate strategic planning for IT and PACS related Medical Imaging initiatives.
- Manages change through thoughtful stakeholder engagement, communication, education, coaching and support.
- Extract, analyze, and summarize data preparing quality management reports that facilitate decision support.
- Monitor system logs and performance metrics; escalate issues to vendors as needed and follow through to resolution.
- Assist in maintaining documentation for workflows, support procedures, and system configurations.
- Develop, review, and revise Medical Imaging/PACS-related policies such as password management, security, disaster recovery, downtime procedures, off-hour support, quality assurance, data integrity, archiving regulations, image access requests/CD burning, and patient privacy concerns.
- Works closely with Medical Imaging Leadership to develop operating standards, policies, and procedures.
- Reviews customer feedback, compiles and analyzes support data, and recommends procedural and educational changes, as appropriate.
- Participate in RFP processes impacting Medical Imaging applications, hardware, and equipment.
- Organize and administer PACS-related training programs, participate in staff and learner onboarding and training, and support REB approved research initiatives.
- Collaborate and work closely with IT, End User Computing, Network Security, Engineering, and Clinical Engineering to manage modality integration and support imaging hardware as needed.
- Collaborate with external agencies (e.g., OCINet/HDIRS, Connecting Ontario, etc.) to manage networking and ensure accurate archival of health data.
- Ensure compliance with privacy, regulatory, and security standards, including HIPAA and DICOM/HL7 communication protocols.
- Perform cross-functional duties as assigned or requested
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in computer science, health informatics, information systems, electronics, medical or radiologic science or engineering required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience administering PACS, RIS, and imaging informatics systems in a clinical or healthcare environment.
- Experience with Epic, including Radiant RIS, strongly preferred.
- Experience with third-party advanced radiology application software an asset (e.g., Nuance PowerScribe 360, TeraRecon, cvi42, OrthoView, AW server applications, etc.), an asset.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with DICOM, HL7, IHE integration profiles; PACS, RIS, VR, and imaging modality workflows (e.g., CT, IR, MG, MR, NM, PT, US, XR).
- Comprehensive understanding of computer hardware and software systems and general networking principles such as TCP/IP and routing
- Computer literacy required; strong working knowledge of Windows 10/11, MS Office, Windows Server 2016/2019, SQL Server, and Unix & Linux environments is required.
- Working knowledge of database administration and programming in SQL, Oracle, or other database language required.
