The Opportunity
As a global provider of intelligent network and service solutions, Ciena helps some of the world’s largest networks produce more – more data services for emerging market opportunities and more efficiency through network convergence and automation. Our team is looking for an energetic Intern/Co-Op software designer, or Data Scientist, that is eager to participate in the design and development of software test automation and data pipelines. Ciena currently has an Intern/Co-op opening commencing in September 2025.
The successful candidate will work within the Agile and Programmable Optical Transport (APOT) organization as a member of the Photonic Performance and Automation Team. The focus of this position will be to assist in software instrumentation and automation tool development to capture various performance metrics from the product and generate insights from this data through dashboard visualizations and custom ETL pipelines. Knowledge of standard data science and statistics techniques will be considered an asset.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

• 2nd – 4th year Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
• Those in post-graduate programs will also be considered.
• Previous programming experience on a related school project or other related experience through hobbies, clubs, etc.
  The pay range for this position is $24.50-$33.00/hour

The successful candidate will join the Photonic Performance and Automation to instrument the software to help gather better performance metrics and develop test automation to capture and analyze these metrics while the system is under test. Specific responsibilities may include:

• Adding instrumentation to the existing software.
• Capturing various metrics from a network while it’s under test.
• Development and maintenance of scripts to automate performance metric captures.
• Development of various visualizations to present performance data on dashboards.
• Development and assessment of data pipelines
• Executing automated test scripts, interpreting, and reporting results and help in debugging problems.
• Assisting in resolution of problems reported and contributing to improved product quality in functionality, performance, robustness, and hardening areas.
• Working closely with test engineers, SW designers and systems architects to understand the product capabilities and expected behaviour.

The Must Haves

• Working knowledge of scripting and other software programming languages like C, C++, Python, JavaScript, Bash Shell script.
• Knowledge of fundamental data science techniques.
• Software development and test process, including revision control systems like Git.
• Familiarity with Linux based workstations and OS.
• Familiarity with software performance concepts is a plus.
• Enthusiastic, self-motivated, strong communicator, team player, problem solver and ability to multi-task.
