Job purpose The Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) Intake Coordinator serves as the primary access point for patients requiring psychiatric evaluation and admission. The role ensures timely, clinically appropriate, and regulatory complaint intake processing for individuals presenting and/or being referred with behavioral health needs. Responsibilities Review patients pending admission to the BHU including but not limited to: Review of medical chart to ensure patients are appropriate for admission to the BHU per unit admission/exclusion policy. Actively communicate with consulting psychiatric provider, ER nursing staff, and/or BHU nursing staff to navigate questions and/or concerns to ensure a smooth and streamlined admission or denial. Provide a face-to-face assessment of patients pending admission to the BHU for any discrepancies with ADLs, cognitive deficits, etc. Review incoming referrals from external facilities and evaluate them for possible admission to the BHU including but not limited to: Review with the referring provider regarding patient diagnosis and ER/Inpatient status. Present patient for admission to the BHU with admitting provider and Inpatient Charge Nurse. Communicate with the referring provider/facility with disposition decision. Electronically track external referrals. Active communication with the BHU nursing staff and consulting psychiatric provider on bed availability and planned discharges. Active communication with the BHU Program Director regarding referrals and potential admissions. Field and navigate questions regarding admission eligibility criteria for the BHU. Provide resources and education to assist emergency rooms and inpatient units with packeting out patients to external facilities. Being an advocate for the BHU to ensure patients being referred and admitted are clinically appropriate. Serves as a resource person to healthcare professionals concerning psycho-social problems and community resources. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in performance improvement activities. All other duties assigned and within scope of licensure. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree, preferred. Active RN Nursing License in state of practice, required. Two or more years of previous experience in all aspects nursing with an emphasis in psychiatric work. BLS HWC training will be provided. Basic computer knowledge Strong interpersonal skills
