Overview PRIMARY FUNCTION AND RELATIONSHIP TO TOTAL ORGANIZATION: The Lactation Consultant responds to the requests of support for breastfeeding mothers in all areas of Iowa Lutheran, Iowa Methodist and Blank Children’s Hospital including outpatient clients. Consultants assist breastfeeding mothers through one-to-one interactions and telephone conversations. Public awareness of Iowa Health – Des Moines Lactation Services is enhanced through the consultant’s interaction with the community. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and FREQUENCY: · Integrates and demonstrates CORE values and Expectation for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional actions and Behaviors ( C ) · Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. ( C ) · Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service. (C) · Balances team and individual responsibilities, objective and open to other’s views, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to positive team goals, puts success of team above own interest. (C) · Uses critical thinking skills to determine who has breastfeeding concerns and/or is at risk of developing breastfeeding problems (C) · Completes a thorough breastfeeding assessment of above identified clients to determine the nature and specifics of the breastfeeding concern/problem. · Develops in collaboration with the client and healthcare team a plan of care that addresses the identified breastfeeding problems and includes the mother’s breastfeeding goal/s. (C) · Commitment to customer service and the Standards of Practice for an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. (C) · Knowledge in the field of adolescent and adult learning needs. (C) · Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional, educational and lifestyle backgrounds. (C)
