Description The RN Unit Manager provides support and stability to the unit assigned through the knowledge of general nursing principles and procedures, and leadership skills. The RN Unit Manager displays a positive, professional image and enhances the positive public image of the facility. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES A. Organize, Supervise and Evaluate Resident Care Facilitate communication among and between family members, residents, staff members, and management Notify appropriate contacts during change of condition of a resident Assure facility medical records, policies and procedures are adhered to Other duties as assigned. B. Quality Improvement within the Unit Identify learning needs of staff members and inform Director of Nursing and Staff Development Nurse Monitor rate of accidents and infection rate and develop plans of correction Complete monthly and weekly reports are needed C. Conduct Performance Evaluations of Staff Members Participate in probationary and annual performance evaluations D. Participate in Nursing Management Activities and Committees Monitor and assure care plans are current and accurate Be prepared for and attend care plan meetings Assure physician’s statements are reviewed, complete, signed/dated E. Know and Support Facility Philosophy, Standards Policies and Procedures Notify Director of Nursing when staffing in not sufficient Assure completion of weekly, periodic and discharge summaries Participate in state surveys as necessary SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES RN Unit Manager will be responsible for directing and supervising the nurses and other staff members on their unit. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Registered Nurse graduate from accredited school of nursing. Current & valid RN license in the state of Indiana 1 year administrative nursing experience. 2 years geriatric or long-term care experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical Will need to be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist and reach to the floor. Must have eye/hand coordination sufficient to set up and administer injections, prepare/administer medications and treatments and adjusting flow rates and use medical equipment. Pushes/pulls medication/treatment carts weighing 100 pounds a distance of 600 feet. Must be able to clearly speak at a volume adaptable to the hearing impaired. Lifts and carries equipment weighing 25 pounds. Sensory Must be able to hear normal volume sounds and voice patterns with constant background noise. Must be able to hear lung, bowel and blood pressure sounds with appropriate diagnostic instruments. Must be able to receive and follow verbal and written instruction. Must be able to assess changes in resident conditions. Must be able to smell smoke, spoiled foods, incontinent residents, etc. Must be able to respond to audible emergency signals, alarms, call lights and telephones. Must be able to read regular/small size print in multiple colors. Must possess skills for continuous handling, fingering and feeling required for palpation, operating and maintaining equipment and providing medical treatments, i.e. wound care, resident care and medication/treatment administration. Cognitive Must be able to remember multiple assignments over an extended period of time. Be able to remember data derived from assessments and document, review, specific requests, ideas and concepts and relate them as necessary. Must be able to concentrate on details during constant interruptions. WORK ENVIRONMENT Works primarily indoors in a climate controlled setting. There is the potential for exposure to blood, body tissues and fluids with occasional exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases. Exposure to chemicals is occasional.
