About the Opportunity We are seeking a motivated and reliable Road Maintenance Engineer to join our Timaru-based team. This role focuses on planning, supervising and delivering road maintenance, renewal and improvement works to ensure safe, efficient and resilient transport networks for local communities. The successful candidate will work closely with contract crews, suppliers, traffic management personnel and internal teams to achieve high-quality outcomes and maintain compliance with health, safety and environmental standards. Key Responsibilities Plan, programme and coordinate day-to-day maintenance and renewal activities, including resource allocation, plant scheduling and sequencing to meet contractual requirements and programme milestones. Supervise and inspect contractor and in-house maintenance works on site to ensure compliance with specifications, drawings, contract conditions and NZ standards; raise and manage non-conformances and corrective actions. Provide on-site technical support and guidance, interpret design and maintenance drawings, resolve minor design or construction issues and liaise with design teams or external consultants where required. Prepare and implement traffic management plans in coordination with traffic controllers to maintain safe work zones and minimise disruption for road users. Ensure strict adherence to health, safety and environmental procedures; conduct site inspections, lead toolbox talks and promote a positive safety culture across all worksites. Engage proactively with stakeholders including local authorities, utility providers and community representatives to manage expectations and maintain good working relationships. Skills & Experience – What You’ll Bring Tertiary qualification in civil engineering, civil construction or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience in road maintenance or infrastructure delivery. Previous site-based experience in road maintenance, pavement rehabilitation, resurfacing or civil construction is preferred; graduates with relevant practical placements or project experience are encouraged to apply. Good understanding of local road maintenance practices, pavement materials, NZS standards and common contract forms used in New Zealand. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with contractors, suppliers, regulatory bodies and internal teams. Experience working with RAMM or similar asset management systems.
