JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a skilled Roller Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heavy equipment operation, particularly with rollers, and will be responsible for ensuring the proper compaction of various materials in construction projects. The role requires precision, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety to ensure smooth, durable, and high-quality surfaces. The successful candidate will work on various projects in Ottawa and surrounding areas, collaborating with a team to meet project deadlines and quality standards.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of experience operating asphalt rollers or similar heavy equipment in road construction or paving projects.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid Ontario G driver’s license with a clean driving record. AR/ARZ license is an asset. Certification in heavy equipment operation (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with asphalt paving processes, compaction techniques, and equipment maintenance. Understanding of Ottawa’s construction standards and safety regulations.
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and ability to operate machinery with precision.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, grades, and blueprints.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina to work long hours in outdoor conditions.
  • Safety: Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and other relevant safety standards.
  • Availability: Willingness to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime during peak construction season (April–November).

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy machinery requires adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Projects may require travel within Ottawa and surrounding areas (e.g., Smiths Falls, Winchester, Embrun).

Responsibilities
  • Operate asphalt rollers (static, vibratory, or pneumatic) to compact asphalt, gravel, and other materials to specified densities and smoothness.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections and routine maintenance on rollers to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Follow project plans, grades, and specifications to achieve proper compaction and surface finish.
  • Coordinate with paving crew, foremen, and other equipment operators to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Monitor asphalt temperatures and adjust rolling patterns to achieve optimal results.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all safety regulations and protocols.
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to the site supervisor.
  • Assist with other construction tasks as needed, including raking, shoveling, or traffic control.
