ALL REQUIREMENTS ABOVE WITH THE ADDITION OF:

  • Certification in pesticide/herbicide application (ROW designation).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in grounds maintenance or related work, or equivalent amount of training and experience as a non-probationary Tech I.
  • Significant knowledge in the hazards & applicable safety requirements of equipment & machines used.
  • Significant knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to direct subordinates.
  • Ability to operate the Mobile 311 work order system.
  • Considerable experience with tools, equipment, and manual work in grounds maintenance.
  • Must have valid Class A or B CDL Drivers’ License and excellent driving record.

  • Must have forklift certificate - Must have bucket truck training.

  • Must be flagger certified.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS TECH I & TECH II

  • Walking, standing, lifting, carrying, kneeling, squatting, bending, pulling, pushing and reaching constantly.
  • Carrying, lifting and manipulating materials weighing up to 35lbs. regularly.
  • Occasional carrying, lifting and manipulating materials weighing up to 75lbs.
  • Climbing ladders as well as climbing into and out of/onto and off of various pieces of grounds keeping equipment, vehicles and equipment trailers.
  • Operating manual hand tools (rakes, shovels, pruners, etc.), light hand power tools (portable hand drills, saws, blowers, etc.), other power tools (chainsaws, hedge trimmers, brush chippers, push mowers, tamps, sod cutter, etc.) and small power equipment (riding mowers, etc.) for extended periods of time.
    WORKING CONDITIONS TECH I & TECH II - This position works almost exclusively outdoors, year-round, and in all weather conditions. - This position requires occasional evening, weekend, holiday and call-in work. - This position is considered an “ESSENTIAL POSITION”, meaning that work may be required during extreme weather events and other emergency situations

Responsibilities

PURPOSE

This position is classified as an essential employee who performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks with the objective of maintaining and preparing the Town’s Right of Ways (ROW), and easements for the safe and appealing enjoyment of the community. These tasks require the use of manual tools, powered hand tools and light mechanical equipment generally associated with ROW and easement mowing and maintenance within the Towns corporate city limits.

- Must have good communication skills and be able to interact positively with both the public and co-workers. - Must be able to perform a variety of manual tasks in the maintenance and repair of right of ways (ROW) in regards to. Digging out holes with manual and automatic digging tools; operates a compactor; operates ground maintenance equipment; mows road shoulders ROW and Town easements; cuts trees and bushes with manual and automatic cutting tools.

  • Work assignments are repetitive in nature, and once learned can be completed without difficulty under general supervision.
  • Must be able to work with some independence and to utilize skills which require substantial on the job training.
  • Work is reviewed by superiors to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that instructions are being carried out correctly.
  • The public contact requirement with the ROW division and job hazards are significant classification factors, as well as inner departmental relationships.
  • Must be able to understand catalogues, manuals and manufactures instructions, for tools and equipment.
  • The potential for on-the-job accidents and injuries for this class of employee is significant; therefore, the ability to follow safety procedures is a job requirement.
  • May assist with a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks with other Public Works Departments when needed.
  • Assists in the cleaning and unclogging of storm drain culverts, and catch basins.
  • Mows and cleans ditches, gutters, culverts, and easements.
  • Cleans vehicles, equipment, and tools; as well as the shop and work sites when needed.
  • Assists in establishing traffic control to include barricades, cones, all signage, & vehicle traffic flagging.
  • Makes and installs street name signs, traffic control signs; maintenance of all Town owned signs with straightening, cleaning and graffiti removal.
  • Assists in the salt brine operations of making and placing. Assists in all winter clearing activities of snow, ice and downed trees in roadways and ROW.
  • Assists in performing solid waste collections; to include recycle, solid waste, yard debris, bulky items, and animal carcasses when needed.
  • Performs or assists in ROW mowing, raking, trimming hedges, edging sidewalks and driveways.
  • Performs or assists in removing various debris from the ROW, i.e. litter, sticks and pinecones.
  • Performs or assists in maintenance & service in minor repairs to various small engine machinery used in ROW maintenance activities.
  • May be required to assist with setup and tear down of holiday decorations.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned

All duties above and the addition of:

  • Significant experience and proficient skill with larger equipment (such as reach mowers, backhoe, etc.) and power tools (such as chainsaws, chippers, etc.).
  • Must achieve certification in pesticide/herbicide application.
  • Serves as a lead worker in crew engaged activities.
  • When assigned, may be required to coach, mentor, train and/or oversee coworkers when supervisor is not present.
  • Must complete additional training or course work in basic leadership skills
