Safety and Environment Technician
Job Purpose
Based in Belen, Heredia, this person will be responsible for ensure the implementation and supervision of occupational safety and environmental management systems, promoting a safe and sustainable work environment. Identify, prevent, and control occupational and environmental risks while ensuring compliance with legal regulations and corporate policies.
Key Responsibilities

Occupational Safety Management

  • Supervise operations to identify occupational risks and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Manage work permits for critical activities such as working at heights, confined spaces, hot work, and handling hazardous substances.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) to identify hazards and establish effective controls.
  • Lead periodic safety inspections and ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Environmental Management

  • Monitor and control environmental aspects generated by operations, such as waste management, emissions, and discharges.
  • Ensure compliance with Costa Rican environmental regulations and internal sustainability policies.
  • Participate in the implementation and monitoring of environmental management programs, such as waste reduction and energy efficiency.
  • Oversee the proper segregation, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

Training and Awareness

  • Provide safety and environmental inductions and training for employees and contractors.
  • Lead campaigns to promote a culture of prevention and sustainability within the organization.

Incident and Emergency Management

  • Investigate workplace accidents, environmental incidents, and near-misses, analyzing root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
  • Coordinate emergency drills, including safety and environmental scenarios.

Regulatory Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with Costa Rican occupational safety and environmental laws, as well as corporate safety and environmental standards, procedures, and strategies.
  • Maintain updated records related to inspections, training, permits, and safety and environmental audits.
  • Prepare technical reports and analyses for management.

Contractor Supervision

  • Ensure contractors meet safety and environmental requirements while performing work on-site.
  • Conduct audits and performance evaluations of contractors in terms of safety and environmental compliance.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Technician in Occupational Safety, Environmental Management, or related fields.
  • Experience: At least 1-2 years in similar roles in industrial or construction environments.
  • Technical Knowledge:
  • Costa Rican legislation on occupational safety and environmental management.
  • Work permit management for critical risks.
  • Identification and control of environmental aspects (waste, emissions, etc.).
  • Management systems based on ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 (preferred).
  • Skills:
  • Effective communication.
  • Problem-solving and teamwork.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Working Conditions

  • Available from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm or 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
  • Work in operational, industrial, and field environments.
