Responsibilities:

AS A SAFETY AND HEALTH OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH MANAGER WITHIN THE OFFICE OF THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR, NORTHWEST-PACIFIC ISLANDS REGION, SOME OF YOUR SPECIFIC DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Serve as primary leader of safety, occupational health, and industrial hygiene among Science Centers in the Region.
  • Interpret and apply a variety of local, state, and federal regulations on worker safety and occupational health.
  • Identify and quantify hazards in field operations, laboratories, and other potentially high-hazard operations.
  • Recommend program changes, administrative controls, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and other solutions to resolve safety and occupational health problems.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with superiors and other managers, peers, subordinates, and cooperators to meet organizational and project goals and objectives.
  • Write official directives, instructions, and safety notices for distribution outside of the immediate office.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions on a variety of safety and occupational health topics.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage regional and Science Center occupant emergency and continuity of operations plans.
  • Provide emergency response planning assistance to the Region and its Science Centers.
    Physical Demands - The work requires frequent travel to visit sites requiring on-site inspection or for conducting safety training. It is not uncommon for the incumbent to accompany field crews while conducting the safety assessment and to participate by carrying sampling and test equipment or providing other assistance. Work may require extended periods of walking and standing, climbing ladders, or working in inclement weather during surveys, inspections, and on-site trainings.
    Work Environment - Work is primarily performed in an office that is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. During surveys, investigations, inspections, and trainings, the incumbent may be required to use a variety of personal protective clothing and equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Medical clearance for respirator use may be required.
