How the role developed

The Risk Analyst role formalised during the growth of financial services in the 1980s and 1990s, accelerating sharply after the 2008 financial crisis when regulators required banks and insurers to dramatically strengthen their risk frameworks. Basel II and III accords, Solvency II, and the FCA's Senior Managers & Certification Regime all created sustained demand for risk professionals.

The role has since spread beyond finance into tech, healthcare, and the public sector.

The role today

Today, risk analysis is increasingly data-driven. The rise of real-time data, machine learning models, and complex global supply chains has expanded both the scope and the technical demands of the role. Risk Analysts who combine traditional frameworks with modern data skills are among the most sought-after professionals in regulated industries.

- Risk analyst roles are a strong foundation for careers in financial services, insurance, and corporate governance. Most people deepen into senior risk, second-line leadership, or specialist areas such as credit, operational, or enterprise risk.

  • Lateral moves into compliance, fraud, or operations are common when you want broader control or front-line impact. Regulatory waves after Barings, the financial crisis, and Consumer Duty keep second-line risk relevant even as banks automate reporting.
