Responsibilities

THE ROLE:

The Electrification Solutions New Markets (ESNM) organization within Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls, (VMEC), has an opening for a Safety Design Controls Engineer. ESNM is a start-up within VMEC that focuses on battery management solutions for non-automotive or unique automotive products. In this role, you will directly impact GM’s strategy to expand into new markets such as Autonomous Manufacturing, Mobile Power Generation Systems, Stationary Energy Storage Systems, Specialty Vehicles, Watercraft, and Locomotives! We are seeking creative, highly motivated, agile thinkers with passion and expertise in Safety, Controls and Software, with great attention to detail.
In this role as the Safety Design Controls Engineer, you work jointly with System Safety Engineers to develop the Solution Context and Solution Intent at the Software level (define requirements and communicate solution vision), analyze technical trade-offs, determine the primary components and subsystems, identify the interfaces and collaborations between them, define Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs), guide Enablers utilizing JIRA, and work with Product Management, Program Management, System Safety, and Suppliers to help ensure the System Safety requirements and strategy are met. This individual will be heavily integrated with the Agile Teams to elaborate and develop software and hardware solutions, validating technology assumptions, evaluating implementation alternatives, and supporting our CICD strategy.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Define Safety System Architecture : Collaborate with System Safety Engineering to plan high-level product design, explore alternatives, and ensure scalability, maintainability, and testability. Define subsystems, interfaces, and derive lower-level requirements.
  • Support Planning and Implementation: Provide technical guidance, review architecture designs for Battery Management Systems, assist in backlog refinements, prioritize Safety Critical requirements, and ensure adherence to UL Certification, DVUL, and ASIL requirements.
  • Enable CICD Pipeline: Provide design guidelines for Safety Critical Software, support Built-in Quality/Continuous Compliance, and perform Software Safety Analyses. Establish and define Safety System requirements and calibrations.
  • Direct Safety Shared Services: Prioritize backlog, define deliverables for Scrum team development, mentor engineers, and review safety monitor designs.
