SAFETY DESIGN ENGINEER

(Senior / Principal Level – Hydrogen Plant Design)
Be at the forefront of the clean energy revolution. We are developing breakthrough hydrogen production technologies, and we need a seasoned Safety Design Engineer to ensure our innovations meet the highest safety and regulatory standards. In this senior role, you’ll shape the design of pioneering hydrogen systems, working with world-class engineers to bring safe, efficient, and future-ready solutions from concept to reality.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering.
  • 10+ years’ experience in process safety and design engineering, ideally within the energy, hydrogen, or chemicals sectors.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • DSEAR – Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations
  • PSSR – Pressure Systems Safety Regulations
  • ATEX directives & hazardous area classification
  • PED – Pressure Equipment Directive
  • Proven expertise with high-pressure hydrogen systems, valves, containment, and safety instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead HAZOPs, risk assessments, and produce detailed technical safety reports.
Responsibilities
  • Lead design risk assessments and ensure compliance with PED, DSEAR, PSSR, and ATEX for systems involving hydrogen, high-pressure gases, and thermal processing.
  • Identify safety risks in equipment designs and propose robust, practical solutions.
  • Specify and design safety systems, control strategies, and protective measures for hydrogen and syngas equipment.
  • Develop and review P&IDs, HAZOPs, and process safety documentation with engineering and R&D teams.
  • Ensure designs meet all pressure systems legislation, including preparing written schemes of examination and documentation for certification.
  • Support safe design and layout of pilot plants and commercial units (e.g., modular skids, enclosures, safety zoning).
  • Collaborate with regulators, notified bodies, and third-party safety assessors to secure project approvals and certifications.
  • Mentor junior engineers and champion a proactive, safety-first culture across the business.
