Description Job Summary: The Safety & Environmental Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety and environmental programs, policies, and procedures that meet ISO14001, OSHA, NFPA, DOT, ADEM, EPA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization’s procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. This position ensures the organization complies with all current safety and environmental regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures as well as respond appropriately to protect the environment as well as collect data and reports on all safety/environmental incidents/events and assist in corrective actions as needed. Duties/Responsibilities: · Participates in the development and implementation of safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fire protection, PSM and other OSHA safety compliance programs. · Participates in the development and implementation of site Environmental Programs such as ISO14001 and ensures compliance. · Advises employees regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of employees and well as regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies including OSHA and the EPA · Performs hazard analysis and recommends mitigation procedures · Conducts routine and follow-up environmental, health, safety and hazard inspections in the plant · Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire and smoke incidents, or unknown hazards; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations for improvement · Collects and analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendation for correcting unsafe conditions and actions · Provides safety/environmental training to all employees and contractors · Participates in the Emergency Response Teams · Other duties as assigned Required Skills/Abilities: · Ability and experience performing safety/environmental inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA, ADEM, EPA and other standards. · Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports · Ability to develop, implement and enforce safety programs and protocols · Ability to react calmly to emergency situations · Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions · Ability to foster a safety culture with employees throughout all levels of the organization · Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. · Ability to prioritize tasks and follow through to completion · Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment. · Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. · Ability to develop training materials and present to a group. · Understanding of Process Safety Management. Requirements Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree; at least five years related experience or a combination of education and work experience. ERT (EMT, Fire Brigade, HazMat) experience is desired. Physical Requirements: Requires heavy physical work including occasional heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 lbs. Frequent walking and stair climbing. The work environment involves exposures to hazardous materials and physical risks, which require proper safety precautions of which the ability to see and hear are essential. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and or loud noises. Must be able to pass physical exam for the Emergency Response Team.
