National Shunt Service Ltd. operates across North America and we specialize in yard management (shunting). Over 20 years of experience providing innovative yard management services (operations and technology), NSSL executes a TOTAL YARD MANAGEMENT PROGRAM for any type of manufacturer or cross-dock operation in North America. We call it shunting but you may know it as: spotting, jockeying, yarding or switching.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Safety Manager is a key leader responsible for building and sustaining a proactive, data-informed safety culture across our transportation operations. This role drives safety strategy, partners deeply with field operations, and uses hands-on coaching, analytics, and problem-solving to create safer environments for our teams and clients.
This position is in the field approximately 80% of the time, directly engaging with teams, assessing risk, coaching leaders, and collaborating with internal and external client stakeholders. When not in the field, this role contributes to strategic planning, reporting, SOP development, and continuous improvement from the Vaughan Office Location.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of field-based safety experience in logistics and warehousing, or a similar environment.
  • 2+ years in a safety leadership or management role, preferably overseeing multiple sites or regions.
  • Knowledge of Fleet or transportation considered an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and Canadian provincial safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence others, and build strong relationships in the field.
  • Experience with safety analytics, performance metrics, and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage frontline workers and executive stakeholders.
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred.
  • Must be able to travel up to 80% in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport required.

Responsibilities
  • Champion a proactive safety culture by modeling leadership behaviors and building trust with field Managers/Supervisors and frontline employees.
  • Act as a coach and mentor to Operations, helping embed safety ownership at all levels.
  • Partner with operations teams to develop site-specific safety solutions, SOPs, and equipment safety programs that reduce risks and support operational flow to reduce damage, incidents and injuries.
  • Collaborate with external clients and operations teams to align safety objectives and resolve concerns.
  • Identify and remove systemic safety barriers with practical, scalable fixes.
  • Lead or support incident investigations and after-action reviews to determine root causes and facilitate learning.
  • Engage internal clients post-incident to discuss corrective actions and improvements.
  • Ensure timely documentation and follow-up on all incidents and corrective actions.
  • Design and implement preventative safety programs, and behavior-based safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Development team to create and deliver training.
  • Analyze safety data and track leading indicators, such as near misses and hazard observations, to guide improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable U.S. (OSHA, DOT) and Canadian (OH&S) regulations and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with the SQC Manager on insurance claims, SOPs, Safety awareness programs and initiatives.
  • Oversee and participate in audit programs.
  • Actively participate in Tailgate meetings.
