Description Job Description Title: Safety Specialist Department: Health, Safety & Security Reports To: Health, Safety & Security Manager Position Location: Gramercy, LA FLSA Status: Exempt Effective Date: 11/5/2025 Job Summary/Objective The Safety Specialist will provide guidance on occupational safety and health standards, risk assessment methodologies and safety management systems on their scheduled shift. This role will focus on compliance, critical hazards, and risk reduction. This role will drive behavioral change to achieve a culture of hazard recognition, abatement and/or risk reduction. Essential Functions Facilitate the organization's safety & health ownership through integration of the safety & health management system. Assist with the development and utilization of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying and evaluating hazards. Assist departmental and safety leadership with the development of short and long-term safety & health objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that identify critical hazards, prioritize, and mitigate risks. Evaluate, interpret, and ensure compliance with safety and health laws, regulations and company policies as it relates to the operation of the department and facility. Deliver safety training to employees in the department. Coordinate the safety work order program for the shift to ensure proper prioritization and completion of outstanding items. Oversee the safety permit system for the department for lock-out/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, mobile equipment, and other items that require permitting. Authorize the issuing of such permits where applicable. Participate in incident/ accident investigations. Responsible for the follow up of action items coming out of audits, incident investigations, and the management of change process. Participate in pre-work meetings to ensure all proper safety protocols are covered and understood by participants. Perform daily audits of the work areas to ensure all safety protocols are applied. Participate in all turn-around pre-work discussions. Participate with facility leaders during agency inspections. Key Competencies Basic knowledge of MSHA regulations and ability to drive compliance of each in the workplace. Strong communication skills. Ability to make difficult decisions in a manufacturing environment. Ability to work within a team environment yet step up to lead. Required Qualifications 3 to 5 years working in a manufacturing environment, preferably in petrochemical. A minimum of 2 years in an occupational safety or industrial hygiene related role. Possess a 30-hour OSHA safety certification or equivalent. Education High School diploma or equivalent. BS degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline from an accredited institution a plus. Work Environment Primarily working outside in a manufacturing environment. Exposed to the elements – heat, cold, rain, etc. Physical Demands Walking Climbing stairs and ladders Sitting at a desk and working at a computer Work Authorization This role requires authorization to work in the United States.
