SYNOPSIS

Sam’s Place is seeking a mature, responsible, dynamic individual to run our coffeeshop kitchen and FOH.
Sam’s Place is a coffeeshop and general store, located at 140 Bannatyne Avenue. Sam’s Place is a Social Enterprise that is owned by Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. It runs a Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program that provides opportunity for young people, often facing barriers, to develop employable skills and gain experience for their future in the work force. We offer a simple food menu, including ready to eat and drink items, handmade craft espresso beverages, and baking. Sam’s Place also sells a wide selection retail products.
The Kitchen and Front of House Lead Supervisor will provide leadership and supervision on the coffeeshop floor daily. They will be the eyes and ears, reporting to the Sam’s Place Manager and working closely with them to ensure the business is running smoothly. They are responsible for the safe operation of food service within the kitchen, and similarly supervising staff and participants to ensure the front of house operates efficiently and safely as well. They will work closely with the Program Coordinator to make sure the floor is properly staffed. The Program Coordinator will ensure the café is well staffed with participants and the Kitchen and Front of House Lead Supervisor will supplement with scheduling paid staff members. The Kitchen and Front of House Lead Supervisor will be responsible for finding coverage where necessary. They will develop SOPs, recipes, and systems, in partnership with the Sam’s Place Manager. They are responsible for daily inventory and ordering.
The Kitchen and Front of House Lead Supervisor will be required to work 37.5 hours a week Monday to Saturday. They will typically work 8am – 4pm.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise Sam’s Place hourly staff (supervisors).
  • Manage the kitchen, including: training staff and participants in food safe practices, planning and preparing food/drinks for service, organizing pantry and fridge inventory, writing pull/par lists, following sanitization and cleaning best practices.
  • Order and organize supplies for both kitchen and front of house including: paper products, soups, baking, coffee supplies, ready-to-drink items, ready-to-eat items, milks, cleaning products, health and safety products, smallwares, etc.
  • Maintain relationships with makers, wholesalers, and buyers.
  • Keep the kitchen and FOH clean and maintained, ex: learning and implementing equipment maintenance protocols, health and safety regulations, adhering to shelf life of food products.
  • Manage the FOH space, including: developing SOPs in partnership with Sam’s Place Manager, ensuring daily tasks are accomplished, noting systems breakdowns and seeking solutions with Sam’s Place Manager.
  • Provide Front of House training, supervision, and leadership to Sam’s Place hourly staff (supervisors), this includes running breaks, and approving time off.
  • Schedule Sam’s Place hourly staff to cover floor, in partnership with Program Coordinator who staffs the floor with participants and manages Participant schedules.
  • Approve Sam’s Place hourly staff timesheets.
  • Develop and maintain safety protocols for kitchen and FOH, especially as it relates to risks in the physical space.
  • Support the execution of the Youth Program, on the café floor, where needed.
  • Provide quality customer service to Sam’s Place customers.
  • Run the espresso bar, make, and serve café style drinks for customer orders.
  • Aid the Sam’s Place Program Coordinator in writing curriculum materials for the Youth Program (such as SOPs for the kitchen), where needed.
  • Open and close the Point of Sale system, providing a closing report each day, when assigned.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Sam’s Place Manager where necessary.
  • Other daily operational tasks as assigned.
