Position Summary: This position is technically responsible for the support of the metallurgical facility through sample preparation. Primary Responsibilities/Key Attributes*: Shop Activities: Performs a variety of Machine Shop duties, ensuring the overall efficiency of sample production Prepares samples including sample cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching. Must be familiar with the latest sample preparation techniques for all types of materials. This includes manual and automatic sample preparation techniques. Working from written specifications, sets up and operates cut-off saw, straight and mitered cuts of various materials and shapes. Makes adjustments, mounts, and replaces blades as needed Measures proper lengths and maintains quality control procedures. Responsible for proper chemical hygiene and safety for all areas of the facility. Adheres to laboratory quality and safety standards. Maintains facility and equipment, including preventative maintenance. Responsible for proper chemical hygiene and safety for all areas of the facility. Adheres to shop safety standards. Qualifications Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience): At least 1 years’ experience working full-time in a machine shop or materials testing laboratory. Ability to apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, lay out and machining procedures Commercial testing laboratory experience preferred. Strong attention to detail with the ability to organize and multi-task. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines Work Conditions/Physical Demands: General machining environment: includes sitting, standing and walking; infrequent lifting of up to 50 lbs., pulling, pushing, carrying, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, and crouching. Frequent use of machinery with moving parts.
