REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in experimental sciences such as physics, materials science, or a related discipline and 3 to 5 years of experience operating a SEM AND STEM tool in an R&D environment or a Master’s degree with 0 to 2 years of experience.
  • Proficient in operating SEM AND STEM microscope and related accessory tools and software. Can independently run the tool on a daily basis, often sitting for the majority of the day at the same tool.
  • Knows how to properly prepare and image semiconductor samples.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with general guidance.
  • Ability to work independently but respond to management direction; asks for and offers help when needed.
  • Ability to operate a Thermo Fisher Helios FIB SEM preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Oxford EDAX detector and software and Thermo Fisher AutoTEM software is preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve STEM/SEM issues that arise from extensive use of the tool is preferred.

Responsibilities

THE ROLE

The Scanning Electron Microscopy Specialist will operate the Helios Thermo-Fisher FIB-SEM and STEM tool and accessories on a daily basis to analyze semiconductor patterned wafers in an R&D environment. This includes using the appropriate sample preparation tools and completing routine tool maintenance.

Job Description:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS ROLE INCLUDE:

  • Work closely with researchers to understand project imaging requirements and deliver high-quality results in a timely manner. On a daily basis you can expect to analyze different samples with different unique patterns.
  • Document and report results in an organized and searchable manner.
  • Prioritize sample requests by consulting with product development manager and working with the researchers.
  • Use EDAX detector to identify unknown materials and quantify thickness of certain layers.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve STEM/SEM issues that arise from extensive use of the tool.
  • Coordinate with vendors for major repairs and upgrades as needed.
  • Keep the laboratory space organized and adhere to formulated products lab safety procedures.
  • Provide technical oversight and direction on tool techniques for FIB and imaging.
  • Remain current with new imaging and tool procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
  • Develop new protocols where modification or adaptation of standard procedures is required.
  • Develop operating protocols and training materials for instrument that can be used by researchers and make those resources available in SOP.
  • Train other identified SEM instrument operators to further develop imaging techniques and skills.
  • Maintain accurate records of FIB-SEM operations, maintenance activities, and research outcomes.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, research findings, and progress updates to departmental meetings.
  • Ensure all work is conducted in accordance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a safe and organized work environment, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Communicate effectively in spoken and written exchange with fellow researchers and external entities.
  • Should demonstrate ability to gather data, compile product or equipment specifications and make recommendations.
  • Ability to learn and assist with using other metrology tools in the lab (XRR, FTIR, Elipsometer, etc.)
