Theatre Cedar Rapids (TCR) is a non-profit professionally run, community based theater committed to delivering high-quality performances while providing an inclusive space for people of all ages to engage in the arts. TCR offers a wide range of theatrical productions, educational programs, and events that foster creativity and enrich the cultural landscape of the region.
TCR is currently hiring a Scene Shop Foreman. Under the supervision of the Technical Director, the Scene Shop Foreman serves as chief carpenter and fabricator of scenery and is the immediate supervisor of shop technicians. This individual collaborates with the Technical Director, Artistic Director, Scenic and Lighting Director, and all production and creative teams in sharing ideas and methods of producing scenery–and making that scenery operational–for our large-scale musicals and plays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a focus in technical theatre or equivalent experience
  • Excellent skill level in carpentry and associated tools and techniques
  • Excellent skill level in metals fabrication and associated tools and techniques - especially MIG welding
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills
  • Willingness to adapt to a very flexible work schedule

  • Ability to read and understand drafting

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years experience as a shop foreman in a producing theatrical venue or scenic studio
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • CAD experience
  • Drafting experience
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting tools and techniques

COMPENSATION:

  • $46,000 to $51,000
  • Salary as reviewed and set annually at formal performance review. Performance based raises will be considered and determined by the level of success achieved as defined by the responsibilities of this job description. Future growth potential into technical direction.

Responsibilities
  • Lead construction and installation of scenery for all productions.
  • Oversee efficient and safe day-to-day working conditions in the scene shop construction areas, performance venues, and other work areas, and the general appearance and cleanliness of those areas.
  • Issue daily work assignments to all shop personnel and, in association with the Technical Director, ensuring shop schedules are met.
  • Manage the scenic build and shop budget in collaboration with the Technical Director.
  • Supervise all stage rigging installation and ensure that rigging is done within industry safety guidelines.
  • Supervise yearly rigging inspection.
  • Instruct and work with volunteers in areas of set construction, operation and care of scenery.
  • Available after hours during established “on call” windows for emergency trouble shooting and repairs of scenery and stage equipment. Managing the staffing of other “on call” periods when not available.
  • Immediate supervision of technicians during load ins.
  • Lead post-production strike and storage/disposal of scenic elements.
  • Conduct inventory of shop supplies on a timely basis.
  • Conduct inventory of shop hand and power tools and provide reports of any missing tools or tools in need of repair.
