Operation Breakthrough’s mission is to help children living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them a safe, loving and educational environment.  Operation Breakthrough strives to support and empower the children’s families through education, advocacy, emergency aid and referral services.    JOB SUMMARY The School-Age Assistant for the School Age Department at Operation Breakthrough will assist Teachers in the instruction and supervision of children in a school day, and/or in after-school programs and participate in school-related activities  (OB summer program begins May 26 and ends July 31)   QUALIFICATIONS * Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 years experience within a childcare/ school-aged program setting.   * Completion of continuing education programs and professional development as required. * Experience with trauma informed care  * Strong behavior management experience    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Ability to read, write and complete necessary paperwork according to procedures. * Ability to prevent or rescue children from a potentially dangerous situations  * Ability to bend, kneel and squat many times each day. * Visual and auditory ability to observe children.  Classroom Management and Adult/Child Interactions * Models and promotes positive dispositions (enthusiasm, friendliness, cooperation, affection, energetic). * Refrains from verbally comparing, criticizing, threatening and physically or emotionally overwhelming children. * Acknowledges children for being successful, helpful or thoughtful. * Encourages children to engage in conversations and events that are meaningful, talk things over, and exchange ideas and opinions. * Promotes a classroom atmosphere that creates a feeling of community. * Verbally interacts with children, kneels, bends or sits to establish better eye contact. * Helps children learn empathy and respect for the rights and possessions of others.  Staff Related Activities and Professional Responsibilities * Promotes agency mission, program mission and educational objectives. * Adheres to policies and procedures including maintaining confidentiality and supporting center’s code of ethical conduct. * Implements goals and procedures for corrective action once addressed. * Attends all agency assigned meetings, gathering information and implementing techniques upon return to the classroom. * Other duties as may be assigned.  COMPETENCIES *  Ability to help students form good habits and practice self-control * Exhibits patience when working with students * Respectful to students and staff * Uses good judgment when making a decision including making sure they are based on sound reasoning and weighing of possible outcomes. * Initiative – the employee is a “self-starter” in attaining job objectives. * Dependability * Arrives at work on time * Available in assigned area at the appropriate time * Leaves work on time * Uses approved lunch/break times appropriately * Demonstrates good role modeling * Good hygiene and personal appearance * Appropriate language, behavior and communication skills * Demonstrate the ability to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, to develop and maintain working relationships with others, to accept interpersonal differences, and to deal effectively with others regardless of level or status.   WORKING CONDITIONS Indoor and outdoor classroom and outdoor recess (weather permitting).  This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of an employee.  Operation Breakthrough is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  Employment with Operation Breakthrough is “At Will”.
