Description SUMMARY The part-time school nurse will work 30-34 hours every two weeks in a job sharing opportunity with another part-time school nurse. The part-time school nurse provides medical care and services to students according to physician prescribed medical care and treatment orders and addresses medical emergencies. Treats students for medical issues and coordinates day-to-day routine health assessments. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned. Monitors and dispenses prescription medications based on instructions from parents and physicians; maintains medication forms to dispense medication to students; tracks amounts given; sends records to parents; prepares reports as requested. Assists with blood sugar monitoring (diabetes)/inhalers (asthma)/Epi-pen administration (allergies). Evaluates students who complain of specific ailments; contacts parents to pick up students who might be uncomfortable or who might have developed a contagious illness. Contacts parents and teachers with any medical emergency; administers first aid and emergency care in case of accident or illness; administers CPR and other emergency procedures. Screens students for hearing and eyesight issues. Educates students on hand washing, germs and other health care and safety issues. Examines, authenticates, and enforces vaccination records compliance; maintains files on each student’s health and medical history. Recognizes and reports child abuse/neglects to Guidance Counselor and Principal. Inspects for head lice. Charts and maintains accurate records of activities performed, i.e., medications dispensed, incident reports, nursing notes, daily treatments and interventions. Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education. Keeps information confidential. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE Current professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, licensed by the State of Florida supplemented by two (2) years previous experience as a nurse. CPR and First Aide certifications must be obtained within one (1) month of employment. WORKING CONDITIONS The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, hear, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of community agencies to help students and their families. Knowledge of district policies and procedures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods of time, lift/move at least 50 pounds, walk, bend, crouch, talk, grasp, hear, and perform repetitive motions of the fingers, hands, wrists, and arms.
