SCHOOL NURSE-TEACHERJOB DESCRIPTIONThe School Nurse-Teacher is a registered nurse who has a college degree as well as additional training in education and dealing with school specific health care issues. The School Nurse-Teachers primary role is to protect and promote the health of students. In the elementary schools, the Nurse-Teacher may be an itinerant, serving more than one building each day. At the middle and high school levels, the Nurse-Teacher is in residence for the full school day.
QualificationsEligibility for certification in the State of Rhode Island as a School Nurse-Teacher.Hold a Rhode Island State license for nursing.Hold a registered nurse certificate from an accredited school of nursing.Immediate SupervisorThe School Nurse-Teacher, under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, works directly with the school principal and staff members.Major Areas of ResponsibilityConduct school health services: Health screening programs (vision, scoliosis, hearing, dental, blood pressure, height, weight, communicable disease). Assist school physician, dentist and optometrist with their health screening service.Identify and meet the needs of children with special health problems when present in school building; be responsible for the first aid, care of student during an emergency or injury.Participate in the Child Outreach Program.Assist and monitor sports and medical health examinations.Assist with counseling students upon request. Assist in curriculum development.Provide health education programs appropriate to each grade level.Provide health education to teachers and parents.Assist teachers in assessing health needs of students.Act as a member of the referral team (MDT, Cap/Cast).Home visits when required.Medication distribution and monitoring.Act as a liaison between school, home and community health services.Review physical and immunization records of students to assure compliance and maintain a health record for each student. Attend meetings and conferences concerning health services.Perform all other nurse-teacher tasks as required.Be an advisor to school administrators on all health related matters pertaining to school faculty, personnel, and students.Attend faculty meetings, orientations, in-service meetings and other meetings to provide a description and interpretation of the school health program.With school physician approval, participate and cooperate with the Rhode Island State Health Department in immunization programs.Notify parents of children who have health deficits and need attention.Communicate with parents when needed to secure further medical informationNotify teachers of a students physical handicap and recommendations when required.Work Year181 daysSalaryAs per terms of the contractual agreement between the Johnston School Committee and the Johnston Federation of Teachers.The Nurse-Teacher reports directly to the school principal or his/her designee
