School Resource Officer/Deputy Sheriff

The Scott County Sheriff’s Department is seeking a POPS certified peace officer to protect and serve the people of the county in all aspects of law enforcement and to comply with all statutory duties required by law. As a deputy sheriff the candidate selected will be responsible for working as a school resource officer. Primary duties will include the following: assist school personnel to prevent or respond to student unrest that poses a danger to the student or others; serve in a professional manner with all students, parents, school district staff, and other persons while on assignment in the school district; make a good faith effort to become familiar with community agencies that aid youths and their families such as mental health clinics and drug treatment centers; make referrals to agencies when necessary to assist the school and students; assist the principal in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations that may result from student unrest; conduct law enforcement related interviews and adhere to the policies of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky Revised Statutes, and other legal requirements when conducting interviews; take law enforcement action as he/she deems necessary consistent with Federal and Kentucky laws. On limited occasion, the selected individual may also have the following responsibilities: patrol county roads in a patrol car with responsibilities for traffic control, investigate criminal complaints, prevent and detect crime or disturbances of the peace, investigate and assist with traffic accidents, and enforce the laws of the state of Kentucky and ordinances of the county and process all violators thereof; attend court, keep order and carry out orders of the courts; execute and serve civil and criminal process of the courts, etc.
Position requires possession of a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of related law enforcement experience. Candidates must also be POPS certified in accordance with the KLEC. In addition, applicants must also be 21 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license for the current state of residence, be of good moral character and have no felony convictions. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have retired from a previous role in law enforcement, especially those retired from service with KERS or CERS. A person with 20 years of related experience will begin employment at $29.17/hr., and those with less related work experience will receive a lower starting rate. The workdays and hours will run concurrent with the school schedule. The normal schedule is 185 workdays during a school year which includes approximately five workdays for annual training. The position offers time off during recognized holidays, fall, spring, and summer breaks.
