Description I. The School Safety Officer reports directly to and is evaluated by the SANY District Safety Coordinator. II. The School Safety Officer shall perform the following duties and responsibilities: 1. Maintain order and compliance with the SANY Charter School District’s Code of Conduct, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations 2. Monitor school stakeholder activities (in and around the assigned building(s). For example, monitor drop-off, pick-up, and other activities to ensure the highest levels of safety and security. 3. Patrol school building and grounds to observe, report, and respond to suspicious and/or dangerous behaviors or activities 4. Attend all safety meetings, and building(s) faculty meetings and share a report (if applicable) with the committee members in attendance. 5. Prevent any unauthorized individuals from entering school grounds. 6. Supervise extracurricular events and contests as deemed necessary by the SANY District Safety Coordinator and/or their designee 7. Coordinate and assist with all building(s) safety drills (evacuations, lockdown drills, shelter-in-place, lockout, etc.) 8. Monitor the building surveillance system(s) 9. Assist with safety trainings within the school community (visit classrooms, present at staff meetings and parent meetings, and communicate with administration on current safety and security best practices) 10. Maintain a visible presence throughout the school community 11. Collaborate with community agencies to ensure that highest levels of safety and security 12. Serve as a liaison with law enforcement agencies 13. The School Safety Officer shall undertake any additional duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary and appropriate by the SANY District Safety Coordinator. III. Minimum Qualifications: (Either) A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate’s degree and 1 (one) year experience as a Deputy Sheriff, Policy Officer, New York State Police, Military Police/Special Forces, or New York State Park Police B. Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 3 (three) years of experience as a Deputy Sheriff, Policy Officer, New York State Police, or New York State Park Police C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (A) and (B) above D. Experience in an urban setting E. Taken de-escalation training Special Requirement: Appointees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job. Special Requirement: A fingerprint supported criminal background check is mandatory for prospective employees of a school district Special Requirement to Carry or Possess Firearms: School Safety Officers may not carry or possess firearms while on duty unless authorized to do so by the SANY Charter School District and a license has been issued pursuant to §400.00 of Penal Law. Where possession of the license is required, eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
