Description:

The Splatsin are the most southern tribe of the Secwepemc Nation, the largest Interior Salish speaking First Nation in Canada, whose aboriginal territory stretches from the BC/Alberta border near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes and to the upper reaches of the Columbia River. Shihiya School has been owned and operated by Splatsin since 1980. The preschool through grade seven curriculum follows that of the Province of British Columbia, which in addition to the integration of Splatsin language and culture into its learning. The school is certified by the First Nations Schools Association and is federally funded by Indigenous Services Canada.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • One of:
  • Diploma or certificate in office administration, or a similar qualification.
  • High School diploma and five (5) years of experience in a similar position.
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willing to participate in job related professional development workshops, courses, or training to further their skills.
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work with students and their families/guardians in a respectful, strength-based way to incorporate cultural practices, values, and beliefs.
  • Knowledge of Splatsin community and Secwepemc culture an asset.
  • Ability to work with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability.
  • Advocate for the best interest of the student and their family/guardian.
  • Prepare, key in, edit and proofread correspondence, invoices, presentations, brochures, publications, reports and related material from machine dictation and handwritten copy.
  • Open and distribute incoming regular and electronic mail and other material, and coordinate the flow of internal and external school information.
  • Schedule and confirm appointments and meetings of employer.
  • Order office supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Answer and relay telephone and electronic enquiries.
  • Set up and maintain manual and computerized information filing systems.
  • Determine and establish office procedures.
  • Greet and direct visitors.
  • Record and prepare minutes of meetings.
  • Arrange travel schedules and make reservations.
